Yet another 'how long is a piece of string' question unfortunately!
Factors to consider:
Where is the water inlet on the van. Near front or back?
How long is the van?
Where is the water supply in relation to how the van is pitched. Same side as water inlet, opposite side to water inlet, close or far from van?
I've got a 7.5m kit to connect my Aquaroll to the tap, and my water inlet is near front of van, for the site I was on the tap was same side of van and close to rear of van, that hose was adequate as it was bought with that site in mind, and it's been the only time I've used it as never been on a serviced pitch since! But now sure I'd need a longer hose for many (most?) sites.
I've seen shared service points placed at rear and between two pitches, one drain and two taps and EHUs, for one van at least that likely means a MUCH longer hose is needed as got to run length AND width of van, AND half the gap between pitches! - or faff trying to feed under van to minimise distance!
Other sites seem to place service point some way behind the pitch, close to a fence or hedge etc. so requiring a longer hose. I think a good guide is how many times I've had to use close to the full length of my 25m EHU cable rather than tuck excess under the van!
There is nothing like a standard pitch layout, every site seems to have their own variation, so consequentially no universally 'ideal' hose length, adaptability seems the best compromise.
I'd choose a 10m primary hose, and have a 10m extension to cope with those taps that were further away. You don't really want a great surplus of continuous hose just lying around if you're only within 7.5m of tap! The fittings are standard garden hose clip together type, so adding the extension if needed doesn't require any faffing of joining hoses with adaptors and jubilee clips etc., just clip into place.
Likewise with the waste (grey) water hose, I've used sites (CS, CL types) where they want you to empty it away into a hedge (rather than fill their tanks by putting down the drains), now that can be some distance away. I bought a 30m length of hose, cut it into 5m, 10m and 15m lengths and with a couple of push fit joints, I can do a mix and match assembly to suit anything between 5m and 30m away. The 30m of hose is lightweight, coiled up neatly and stowed in otherwise unused space in the front gas locker until needed.
As to connecting mains water hose 'directly' to caravan! - The caravan plumbing can't withstand the normal mains water pressure, you need a pressure reducer/regulator to bring the pressure down to usable level. They are easily available and fit in place of the external water pump/pick up pipe. Personally I favoured the float valve in the Aquaroll approach, as that meant there was never any chance of the caravan plumbing being subjected to mains pressure if regulator failed, and I was carrying the Aquaroll around anyway.
