I would have to agree with the trailer as well, roof boxes/bars can be noisy and do increase fuel consumption due to the drag effect that they create. Small trailers are beneficial in that you can load more in them and generally speaking can save on fuel as you are restricted in speed, 60 on motorway - 50 on most other routes unless stated otherwise.
You will also find that most manufacturers limit roof loads to 75kg and that is including the weight of the box and bars as well so in general you have about 50kg to play with on the roof, trailer weights vary but generally speaking an unbraked trailer will hold up to 400kg which gives you much more to play with.
Another factor is that if you load all the camping gear into a trailer you can park it in the garage/garden when you get home and do not have to unpack it so it is ready for the next trip, boot space is then available for clothing and bedding which will need to be washed. There is also the advantage that you can have a bike rack attached to the trailer which again keeps the height down so you can still get into car parks with height restrictions when you are travelling to the camp site!

Having said all that you will have to get a towbar fitted with single electrics and get a trailer, I would not recommend a second hand towbar but would go for a second hand trailer, local papers, Adtrader, Google, free papers, and your local superstore ads oards can have a trailer from £50 upwards, if you want to go for one that needs a bit of work then most spares can be bought on the Towsure website who also do a nice range of brand new trailers and towbars.
