I've used one for years with a Larsen awning. You need poles with screw adjuster/locking device and not turn locks. See here: http://www.isabella.net/pt/accessories/herculestwingutt.html

Muckalo

How are you trying to use it?  Bear in mind it is adjustable to the pole width by turning over the red piece on the bar.

To use it the U shaped wire is placed against the fastening nut and the end with the two rubber feet placed on the pole being moved.  Simply rock the handle backwards until the feet start to slip and the poles are then tensioned.  As this can be done one handed your free hand is then able to do up the wing nut before you release the tension.

In practice easier to do than describe.

Are they worth it? What do they do that you don't do manually? I'm asking because I've seen them in a catalogue and wondered whether i needed one!

Dotty,

Yes they are worth it - awning sits better

If youve got three hands you don't need one

Definitely worth it, does what I am not strong enough to do - gets the awning tensoin just right - no more floppy roofs and sides.  Only one problem, being 5ft tall have to take a ladder with me or borrow a tall camper for the roof ones

Most caravan shops stock them, they are also in the Towsure catalogue, and cost about £14.99, definitely worth every penny
