Just to warn you all again.  We were on the motorway on Saturday and I had to swerve to miss some poor persons bedding and clothing strewn across the lanes.  Their roof box had obviously sprung open during transit and they lost the contents across the mototway.

Even though I have a new box, I always go around it a couple of times with a large rope and tie it securely as I don't fancy picking up my things for miles along the motorways.

Are you sure that it was from a roofbox and not the contents of a "flying" Coleman ?......I heard somewhere that a Quadspace took to the skies during the weekend !!

After reading something similar on here last year, we always strap the roof box to keep the lid secure.

We also noticed in the instructions that came with the roof box (ours was from halfords), it states that you should drive at a max speed of 65mph. We stick to this limit when carrying ours, but we are always overtaken by other cars with roofboxes - some doing over 80mph.

I don't think there is anything in the highway code about speed restrictions when carrying roofboxes (correct me if I'm wrong) but you would think that people would take it easier with their speed - the amount of wind pressure that the box and roof bars are taking must be enormous - even at 65mph I worry about the box being ripped off the car...maybe I'm just being over anxious.

We also saw the contents of a roofbox scattered on the motorway during bank holiday weekend. Luggage straps are very cheap nowdays, Aldi had some in the other week. I am not sure if they would be long enough though. Nothing wrong with secure string.

Same here... I travel at the certified speed and I feel like a donkey walking on the side of the road... sometimes I ask myself if it's me or everyone else is stupid.

i use those stretchy things round ours, but keep meaning to get a luggage strap, the sort that have the little winch type thing on it to pull it taught.

you can never be too careful.

I always use straps even though the wife takes the micky out of me - but hey, at least I can relax when I'm driving and I dont lose my socks on the way there!

Ratchet straps are great for securing roof loads or boxes etc.
They have them in our local pound shop £1 each easily long enough as well as very strong.

Ratchet straps and the like are good but you have to make sure that they dont distort the roof box or it will let in water.
Also remember that if you loose the contents of a roff box then you can be nicked for carrying an insecure load just the same as if a lorry sheds a load

We always strap our roof box up too even though it's fairly new. Read too many disaster stories on here-don't want to take the risk of seeing our 'smalls' flying across the motorway

Just bought our roof box and going for our first camping trip on 24/6/05. Will have to tell OH about straps. Thanks for the advice - never thought about them opening up and speed limits!
