Hi, I have a 3 yr old and a 22 month old, my daughter (3) has been using a 'normal' airbed for a year now and we are antipating my son who is in a travel cot currently will be OK to be 'let free' soon. We had some problems initially because of the freedom a tent can supply but a good junior sleeping bag helped to contain midnight walkabouts.
In terms of size the usual adult ones were to big, a friend gave us an old single with a pillow chamber which was inflated seperately (hope that makes sense). We decided to cut the pillow section off leaving an airbed of about 5 feet which seemed much less unweildy.
I would guess that if you use a bed at home you will be OK, if you still have a cot then it could be an interesting learning curve.
Good luck.
