ive just bought one of those roll up water carrier bags with the little taps- very useful because i can hang it on my motorbike. the problem is ive washed it out several times but the water still tastes like plastic, & the longer i leave the water in it the worse it tastes! i dont want to be brewing plastic tasting tea so has anyone got any tips on what to wash it with, etc......
You could try tesco sterilizing tablets the ones used for baby bottles and leave to soak overnight if that fails good old bi-carb should do the job and it's cheaper too
i would second bicarb, i do a lot of mountainbiking and carry a hydration system on my back which has a plastic reservoir and after every couple of trips i fill it with water, add a couple of teaspoons of bicarb and leave it overnight.next day give it a couple of rinses in clean water and youre away.
I had been looking at maybe getting a roll-up water carrier so am interested in this thread - currently use 2 other types of folding carriers and so far no problems with plasticky taste. In past we've used sterilising tablets when abroad anyway but found they can leave a taste too, particularly in tea (which we drink weak which means it can't mask the back-ground taste of the water). In past found swilling out with Milton solution, which then gets throroughly swilled out afterwards, usually gets rid of any plasticky taste from carriers.
Hi Studley - sorry, I don't wish to hi-jack this thread but from your name are you in Studley in Warwickshire by any chance? If so whereabouts? Just interested as I live in Redditch & am in Studley every day (I work in Studley and visit my mum there every day to walk her dog - I was indeed born there.) Rare to actually see the place ever mentioned anywhere.
I have found that time grts rid of the taste. fill it with water and bicarb or sterilising tablets and leave it full for a while, over night probably. then empty it and rinse. If this doesn't work repeat, only leave it full for longer, it will go away eventually.
thanks everyone - i did put bicarb in it last nite & filled it, couple of rinses this morning & its only slightly better (it didnt stink the bathroom out this time!!) think ill be soaking it overnight with milton, vinegar etc for the next few weeks at this rate (well what can i expect for £4.99 from millets) if all else fails ill have to take empty spring water bottles!!
Chuck it in the bin. we had one and when it wasnt leaking it was smelling/tasting weird. use a 2 ltr coke bottle or buy a platypus roll up bottle as they are guaranteed not to taste of anything,

What's a platypus roll up bottle? I've never heard of them. Where do they sell them and how much please?
We had one of those when we started camping but it went in the bin after our first trip. Now always use a 4lt spring water bottle. Easy to store and pour and you can throw it away after your trip. Plus I don't like drinking water that has been standing around for any length of time.
thanks everyone, i managed to take it back & change it for a fold up plastic one (same price but more rigid plastic) & so far it tastes fine, i just couldnt be doing with all that rinsing out twice a day, hope this one lasts or ill be using spring water bottles!
Used mine for the first time over the weekend and it was revolting. And apart from the practicalities of transportation, I found it a pain to carry, store and put the stupid seal back on once it had been filled. It ended up in the bin pretty quickly and I resorted to empty lemonade bottles in the interim. Shall revert to my beer barrel on luggage trolley method! Already have it so don't have to pay for new carrier (tempting tho some of them are) and the barrel can be used to store the little bits and pieces during transit. Plus its wide neck makes it easy to fill.
