I dont think I met you but were you the only other backpacker on the site?

I went to my local £1 store and bought thin rollmat with silver on one side, Ive never been cold since, its light and easy to carry, and only cost £1!

Are you going to Elvaston meet?  If you are let me know asap and Ill try to get one for you.

We decided we didn't want EHU - until we almost froze one night. Now we have EHU and a halogen heater which is an essential for us even if we don't use it. It was brilliant in Wales a couple of weeks ago as it dried us off too. We are still working out what the essentials are as we are very new to camping, but we reckon the only things we wouldn't take too much of is food. We ended up bringing a lot of it back as it was too wet and windy to cook much so we eat out. I haven't ate fish and chips on a sea wall for years so it was great!

I used to go back-packing .. not with the family, just on my own.

I took a tent, sleeping bag, water purifier, stove and pan set, firelighters, dry food, not a lot more 'cos I had to carry it!

Great fun but very different to campsite camping.

I like the little luxuries when camping on a campsite!

The line moved for me when I had children and took them camping.  The workload grows exponentially with each additional kid and everthing takes much longer....

suddenly I became less smug at my minimalist approach and looked longingly at people with things like tables, chairs and the kitchen sink.  Luxury and gadgets... that is the way to go and I am going to embace it ............. But I still use by faithful trangia...

One day though I hope I will sometimes leave behind the extras, fish out the one man tent again and head for the hills ......  There is something good too about living on the minimum too and being comfortable with very little.

Really they are different forms of camping.

Hi;

"Where to draw the Line", well we started with acaravan and used to take the plastic patio set, etc if it fitted in the caravan then we would take it, but over the years we cut down on what was packed, to make the caravan lighter and to cut down on space required.

Now we have a tent, but we will be buying a trailer for all the gear, as I remember family camping trips as kid. Everything including passangers were inside the cramped car and on a long journey was not good.
So i guess that I am the camper who still needs the luxury items, nut on the other hand kid wants to cycle and camp on route. This would be a case of take essentials only, as you would have to carry on bike.

Guess that you take what you think you need and over the years this changes as you realise that you do not need items that you thought you did.

CYA
