I have been given my dads Tilley Tallisman and its great. The hose says 1976 and I guess thats when he bought it - when I was three which makes sense as its when we started camping.

It has a fixed hose that has the little knowb that attaches to the bottle (that still has gas in it).

For thise who are interested I emailed Tilley about whether it needs a regulator and it definately doesn't due to being made to run at bottle pressure.  This is their response.

COOKER INFORMATION

SINCE 1982 ALL GAS (BUTANE) COOKERS ARE LOW PRESSURE WHICH MEANS THEY NEED A REGULATOR ON THE GAS BOTTLE

PRIOR TO 1982 THE COOKERS WERE HIGH PRESSURE (BOTTLE PRESSURE) WHICH DID NOT USE A REGULATOR

FUEL

THE COOKERS SHOULD ONLY BE RUN ON BUTANE

 PARTS

WE DO NOT HAVE ANY SPARES IN STOCK AT THE MOMENT

AS WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF TRANSFERING PRODUCTION TO ANOTHER COMPANY

WHEN INFORMATION ON THE OTHER COMPANY IS AVAILABLE WE WILL POST IT ON THE WEBSITE

SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY CAUSE

What I need to do now is try and get hold of another bottle for spare and for changeovers otherwise when it runs out I will get caught out and I dont want to fill it before its empty.

There is a b****y good reason they stopped making them run on HP gas.  It is a potential family BBQ with you as the main course.  Gas hoses should be replaced every 5 years or so, that is why the hoses are date stamped, they degrade &  burst.  Running off cylinder pressure, you'd have a massive un controllable gas leak followed by a fireball if there were any sources of ignition - like a stove nearby.  In the event of a cylinder getting knocked over, you also get liquid LPG through into the burner, turning it into a flame thrower.  The only users of HP gas should be commercial who have the facilities to ensure safe use of the bottles, ie that they are clamped to a wall or in a secure cabinet.  The rules changed in 1982, surely this must say something?  Time for a new stove!

Steve.

i had a really old  high  pressure  stove and it  didnt seem to work  any better  than  the new low  pressure one i  have  now ,  I  did  replace the   hose on the old  one  prior to   getting a  new  one.  If you do  replace  the hose you need the more robust  high  pressure  hose  which is  twin wall  braided,  mine was  bright  orange.

Personally   I  wouldnt  bother   with the old high  pressure ones  for the reasons  stated above  ,   Once  i had a  4,5  calor  cylinder   that the valve tap  seized open on  on and  the  gas  really does  come out   exeptionally  fast ,  I  had to  just  take cylinder spewing out gas  and leave it in the open  till it  emptied  .  if the hose  had   split while connected to  an old  high  presssure  cooker it would of  been a similar  situation.  the volume of gas  coming out is  far greater  whereas with  low pressure regulator it wouldnt happen so  dramatically and  less gas  in a shorter time .

Well put guy-rope and Steve McV.

Personally speaking, if you need something that performs better than a gas stove, get a liquid fuel one and run it off Alkylate Petrol.

xraymum,

I know your postings were many moons ago but you may still be able to help.

First of all, have you sold or handed on the adaptor?

If not, could I be cheeky and ask if I can have it?  I am desperately searching for one of these.  I used to have one but I left it my mothers and it got thrown out hen she had the house renovated after my dad died last year.

If you have passed it on, have you still got any details of it?

I would appreciate anything, photo's specifications, even a supplier if you know of one.

Hope you can help.

I have just brought a Tilley Titan and read your interesting comments I want to run it off a Calor Gas 4.5kg bottle of Butane which has a bottle pressure of 2 bar in a previous post somebody said the Titan needs 1 bar to work, so to run off the Butane bottle I have just purchased a adjustable Butane regulator see linkhttp://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/ha117.jpg.
But I'm still not sure how I will use it off a Camping Gaz bottle as it needs full bottle pressure 1 bar and the regulator reduces the pressure to 29mbar I need as said before just a valve that fits directly to the bottle.
The cooker I brought although quite nice is but not perfect, if anybody has one for sale that has had very little or no use and has all the correct fittings please contact me.
Many thanks
Arthur

The Tilley Titan runs directly of the Camping Gaz bottle and does not need or use a regulator or reducer. It will not work properly off a 29 mBar regulator. The standard pressure in the Camping Gaz bottle is correct for these older appliances. I've been using one since 1972 and very good they are too. I wish I could find a suitable connector to link my Titan to a Calor butane bottle, but no luck yet. I think the regulations changed around early '80s and everything is now low pressure, sadly.

The newer versions need a regulator as low pressure.
