I'll apologise in advance for this series of probably-rather-dum questions, but here goes.

After many years cooking on a trangia (with meths) we've decided to get something that we can cook toast in/on.  So we've bought a little two-ring stove with a grill underneath (can't remember off the top of my head what make/model, but i'm hoping that's not going to be relevant to my question - if it is, i'll go and find out).

Said stove states, in it's rather brief instruction sheet, that it can use Propane or Butane. I've seen the threads extolling the virtues of each, and having read them, I think we'll be going with Butane (as we're never going to be going camping at a time of year when freezing might be an issue).

So, my question is this : what do i need to buy to get my new stove working?  A regulator and a gas cannister? Can some kind soul tell me about regulators, is there a specific sort that i need? And where's best to get one from?  And what size of cannister should i get?  what size cannisters *can* you get? And how much cooking time would i get with thos sizes? We'd be camping for 7-10 days at a time, no more.

Sorry for being such a dunce....  It all seemed so simply with me bottle'o'meths and me trangie ;-)  If anybody can point me at a 'idiots guide to camping stoves and accessories' that'd be *really* useful.

thanks

kate

hi i would suggest a 4.5 kg calor gas bottle and a length of hose (depending how far away the bottle will be from the cooker ) and one of these  http://www.cccoutdoors.com/products.asp?recnumber=3695delivery is free and about a low a price as you will get!  ,dont buy your regulator from calor gas they will charge the earth for it !

Oh and instead of forking out for a bottle +the gas! go to your local tip ,and recycling center and see if they have a '4.5kg calor gas' bottle then take it to calor gas and just pay for a refil (about £10.99)and you get a brand new FULL bottle

go to your rubbish tip/recycling yard they sometimes have the bottles in there and then take it and exchange it for a refilled bottle, its much cheaper to do it this way as they can charge about £40 for the first time and then after that its about £10 for the refill sometimes they are in car boot sales and the free ads you will have to get a regulator from the camping shop the bottles to look for are camping gaz 907, calor red = propane blue = butane and the appropriate regulators

 hi

a small thing  that may not be relevant, but here goes anyway.

depending on wether your stove is new  or old?, if it is an old type (we have tilley's)

check on the stove if it says "bottle pressure" if so you will have to get a camping gaz bottle and reg, ( to do with pressure) we had that problen with our stoves.as the new reg's put out pressure at 2.8 m/bar which was no use for them.

if new either the camping bott+reg    or calor bott+reg will do the job
