I have an Electrolux RC1600 absobtion fridge that runs on Gas/240volt/12 volt.When used in the car thro the cigar lighter socket the socket gets very hot(it melted the extension lead plug I tried from Towsure)do you need to set the temp setting on the lowest level to use the fridge in the car?Any advice?Works great on gas and 240volt mains

Hi

Most of the extension leads i've seen use cables and connectors that are not rated for high-current appliances like fridges. On top of that the cigar lighter plugs are pretty awful things anyway.

Can you avoid using the extension lead? Also, make sure the plug is pushed fully home into the socket when you start and every so often during the journey. Turning the thermostat down won't make any difference.

Thats what I thought about turning the stat down that it doesn't make a difference to the current drawn through the plug.I tried the 12volt plug on a journey tonight and it got red hot.It may be worth connecting the 12 volt lead with crock clips to a charged 12v battery and see what happens(see if cable gets hot).These absorbtion fridges are all sold with 12volt cigar plugs so I wonder home other people get on(do their cars catch fire?)Any one else out there got one?

If you're using the lead supplied with the fridge then you shouldn't be having these problems.

It could be that you have some contamination on the terminals in the car socket. Ironically if the cigar lighter is used for the purpose it was designed for, you get ash contamination building up that can cause a poor connection and overheating.

Its not particularly easy, but if you can get a piece of emery paper into the socket to give the connection point at the back a polish up, it might help.

It's about time that car manafacturers started introducing a better 12V connection.

I have a Sibir and the 12v cable is quite thick.

Reading through the instruction book it draws 75 watts on 12/240 volts.

Also they give a table for lenght of cable v cross section

2.5 mm2   = 2.5 meter lenght
4.0 mm2   = 4 meter   lenght
6.0 mm2   = 6 meter   lenght

so it seems that for every meter in lenght you need to increase the cable cross section by 1 mm

Temp setting makes no difference on 12v its not regulated.

I dont think there is an extension lead made that will cope with that ampage.

Using an Extension lead could prove very dangerous, Note Peri's comments and Bigs cable requiremens.
