If you carry gas bottles in a car or trailer (4.5kg calor gas type) are you supposed to display any signs or symbols on the vehicle? I have seen lorries with safety symbols and wondered if there are any rules or regulations relating to cars and small trailers. It seems to make sense in case of a accident or fire to warn the emergency services or others that you have these items on board but I have never seen any used on cars etc. If needed where would you get them?
Common sense here i think. If you feel that the contents of your trailer could cause a hazard should anything go wrong you need to make people aware. But as peridot stated it is nog a legal requirement for Joe Bloggs on his camping trip to display a sign

We stopped at a couple of dealers to look at new caravans while on holiday recently and they all had a red flame thingy sticker on the outside of whichever locker door the gas was behind. Our 7 year old van has the same on it. But they are not like the ones you see on commercial vehicles.
Thanks for the information. As gas is fairly volatile stuff I think the emergency services or anyone else for that matter would like to know what they are dealing with and a little information like a warning symbol COULD potentially save someones life! Seems to be the sensible answer so now I just need to find out which symbol to use. My name's not Norris or Roy Cropper but I thought this would be a interesting topic....
Do you think warning symbols should be compulsory for anyone carrying gas bottles in their car or trailer?

Yes, if it alerts one person and prevents a bad accident then I am all for it.
here is a little aside to the question of gas symbols , if you carry compressed air in your car such as a diving bottle for aqualungs or refilling airgun bottles you have to have the appropriate sign visible for the emergency services to see
However note that there should be 2 warning stickers/signs for butane or propane. A green diamond for pressurised gas and a red diamond for flamable gas. And bear in mind that the signs should ONLY be displayed when the gas cylinder is actually in the vehicle. Stick the stickers on a card and put them on display when you need them. It can cause loads of hassle to display the signs when nothing is actually there, ie in the event of an accident a firefighter would have to make sure there was no risk from your vehicle, where if there were no stickers he would probably be able to get on with something else.
