One of the curses of caravanning or camping holiays is the cloud of tiny midges that descend on you as you are relaxing in the evening with a glass of red wine. One midge repellant that seemed to work was called Autan. Can anyone tell me if it's still available and where I could get some.

Thanks

(ps: new member so i hope i got this right!)

Hi Mart153

Welcome to UKCampsite.  You might want to click on 'search' above, key in 'midges' and see all the recent threads on the subject.  There has been recent mention of candles, repellants, anti-histamines and even hats with nets.  All useful information, but at the end of the day sod's law says that when outdoors there will always be something floating in your red wine.

Yes the Avon woodland fresh - skin so soft moisturiser works - the army and the forestry commission guys use it . They must smell lovely!

We also found mosquito bands - you can get them in boots but I think superdrug may be cheaper - they are colourful stretchy soft bands  (adjustable, suitable for small kids too) you put one on an ankle and theother on the opposite wrist - then as you move the chemicals are released and the pests detered. My son has really quite a bad reaction to any bites (huge lumps) and these seem to work well - doesn't matter if they get wet either.

They are doing a large citronella candle in Somerfields at the moment that looks pretty at night and the smell and smoke keep the midges away. Quite cheap aswell. I need a little more than a candle though because I get bitten lots and get bad reactions from them so I use boots' own brand insect repellent and it's with good. I'm going to try the avon skin so soft this year though as I don't really like the smell of repellent.

Yup

Candles in somerfield are £1.79 for three. They burn for approx 2.5 hours each. Trying them out this weekend so will let you know if they are any good.
