After browsing the websites I cannot seem to get a clear picture of what is worth buying, having bought thule roofbars I naturally thought that the same make for a box would be the right move but have read conflicting stories with reference to the quality below the 200 pound mark. Has anyone got any views or comments on their roofbox , thanks for your help Ian
I have a Thule Alpine 500, not a current model but at the time it was one of their cheaper ones. I can certainly vouch for the quality - very rigid, good spring stay on the lid and solid 3 point lock. Key can only be removed when all 3 locks are closed, so you know the box is shut properly.
Best thing is to go round a few dealers to actually see what you get for the money rather than look at web pictures.
Well, my Thule roof box is about 10 years old and is still going strong.
There was a thread about roof boxes a short while ago, and I posted a note saying that the salesman had told me all those years ago that the Thule boxes were made of a better substance than certain other brands and that they would last longer in more diverse weather conditions. Mine sure has (it's used a lot - up to 10 times a year for up to 3 weeks at a time) and somebody posted a reply commenting on the compounds in the Thule boxes and how good they were.
Whether that still applies, I don't know. But my next box will be a Thule.
I don't know if they make them to the same quality, but Thule make all the Halfords roof boxes and bars. Ours is still quite new so I can't say how long it is going to last, but it feels quite sturdy!
Thankyou to everyone for your time in replying , quite like the atlantis 200 as the new locking arrangement seems a good idea but will try to find a better price than 240 pounds.
I recently bought a Karrite 470 for £134 and I'm very happy with the quality. Because of the obvious need to keep the weight of the box down, none of the cheaper models seem particuraly sturdy. I expect that they will all need careful handling.
We bought the Atera oddyssey 800 for £200 which is apparantly very simialr to the Thule Atlantis 200 but a bit cheaper.
not used it yet but have fitted it to the car and it was very easy to put on, only took a couple of minutes. Got ours of the internet (roofbox.co.uk) because I didn't fancy messing about with roofbars and a roofbox in halford car park
Try the Roof Box Company (internet site details posted above). They have a good range of boxes and delivery can be next day. I went for Thule bars and a Fapa box. Box is great with very little noticable wind noise - I even forget its on.
I was not sure which bars and they advised me to buy steel not the alloy I had planned to do, saving me about £40 how many companies would do that?
Thanks for your reply Tawl , alas I already have Thule aero bars so will have work round that , hard to find anyone round my way to view boxes apart from good old halfords and their prices are no comparison to the net
