Used mine for the first time yesterday and was a bit nervous about the amount of firelighter to use. As a result, I ended up with 1 briquette burning nicely and all the others went out. Also, I was using the Australian heatbeads that everyone has been recomending and I'm not sure how many to use. Only seemed to be able to fit 5 of them beneath the pot stand thing.
Advice please -
How many firelighters should I safely use to get it going?
How many briquettes should I use?
Should I even bother with the pot stand if I'm doing a roast and veggies?
Even tho I failed at my first attempt, I just love the thing. Excellent design and a dream to clean.
I usuall just use 1 firelighter, I pile all the beads in the middle and when they have gone grey spread them out a bit, haven't had a problem with any of them going out.

How many briquettes should I use? ... we use 6/8 depending on whethere we cooking a joint of just barbie stuff and how long we may be cooking for .... 8 last for 3hrs
Should I even bother with the pot stand if I'm doing a roast and veggies? .... yes you use the pot stand ... place the veg (in foil) around the bowl of can do on the grill

We use only one firelighter and break into 3/4 .... spread it around in centre of the bowl ..... place the pot stand on top .... then arrange the heat beads on the top of pot stand - in an upright postion .... don't put the lid on until the coals have gone grey and it's ready to use
1st 4 times I used 2 fighlighters and it was great but thought id try it will one but even though Id broke it up it still didn't get all the heat beads so I had to add another and wait again till they where all gray so Iv'e gone back to using two, just find what works for you and the more you use it the more confidence you;ll get to try different thing on it.

Hope thats of some help to you
I thought the briquettes were suppose to go in the well under the pot stand - am I doing it wrong?
And I can't fit any more than about 5 of them in the well but some of you mention 8!
Had another go today and it worked. Managed to cook a load of chicken legs with lid on along with veggies in the moat and then some home made burgers as well. All turned out brilliantly.
Now I need to work out how to bake cakes with it!
Thanks for the advice folks. Wish I'd seen this link earlier Les!
BTW can anyone tell me where I can get my hands on the Cobb cookbook - I didn't get one with my Cobb. I know there are various recipes online but all the references I keep seeing to the book itself make me feel I'm missing out!
