I've just spent 3 nights on my new Thermarest and I can definitely say that I was very comfortable and I'm a real fuss-pot. I bought the Thermarest Luxury which wasn't cheap £90 (I haven't admitted the cprice to my husband yet!). I seriously got a good nights sleep while my husband slept on the blow up airbed. He ended up on the floor, as usual, and had a bad night all-in-all.
We're off for a weeks camping soon and I'm going to buy another one for him. I know it's a lot of money but I reckon it's worth it - specially when they come with a life-time guarantee.
I got my old Thermarest out of storage yesterday. Bought it back in 1992, a 3/4 length one. I'm using it as an exercise mat, trying to get the stomach into a reasonable shape before the hols - not much hope, but we try, we try.
Anyway, I was very surprised to find how comfortable the thing is, I'd forgotten that ! Might just be looking at replacing the air-beds with 2 new super comfy Thermarests when the funds are available. No point in having a poor nights sleep on the hols now is there ?
We love our Thermarests too. One of the best bits of kit that we've bought.
This weekend we're staying at a friends house, there are three of us going, hubby, myself and a friend. There is one spare double bed - my friend can have it - hubby and I would rather sleep on the Thermarest! We can guarantee a comfortable nights' sleep.
Thanks for this info. I have been toying with getting two Thermarests, but was wary, and it's a lot of dosh to splash out, only to find they are not comfy. I am warming to the idea of Thermarests versus airbed and all the faff that goes with them.
i think the thermarests are overpriced now. ive got a robens 5cm and a 3.8 cm from gooutdoors.net and they were much cheaper, 35 pounds and 22 pounds and very good quality. i too find them more comfortable than the air beds.
I know what you mean about sleeping on the floor out of preference! I would rather sleep in my wonderfully comfortable, cosy and warm bag anyday. Now that I've got my Thermarest I know exactly where I'll be sleeping at relatives and friends houses from now on. Can't wait to sleep on it again actually!
do any of you use the thermarest basecamp? I am toying with the idea of buying one, still can't make my mind up as to whether it'll be comfy enough or if i should wait till i can afford the 'luxury' one...
i was going to get a thermarest basecamp but managed to get a double self inflating mat from lidl for £20, its great the only thing thats not as good as the thermarest is the pack size, but when inflated its 5cm thick which is lovely and comfy.
the shop that sells jackwolfskin stuff (i think its s r cunninghams) in Ambleside is doing single inflating mats (i think they are coleman) for £20 each instead of £45 which looked quite good too.
i will one day get a thermarest but only when ive saved up enough as £180 for 2 mats is a bit OTT at the moment!!
Best thing to do is go and lie on them in the shop (ask them to inflate them if they are not on display - you can't be expected to buy something if you can't actually SEE what you're buying). I did this and went with the luxury - I know it's a lot of money but I felt it was worth it.

Yes i use the thermarest basecamp, and i will say it is fantastic, well worth the money you get a great nights sleep much better than a cheapie mat by far...
I'm going for the Therm-a-RestDreamTime next, its the muts nuts in comfort but very expensive. I want one anyway sod the cost its 8cm thick too.

We've had ours for three or four years, and they are the Standard version (not sure how the naming relates to the new range). We picked ours up when a local store had a discount day, so at a much reduced price. Keep your eye out, I have seen them on offer over the years.
I spent a night on a Thermarest Dreamthing (borrowed a mates to test) and it was excellent (for a mat!). The next night I borrowed a cheap Highlander and it was rubbish (but then it was 20% of the cost of the Thermarest).

I looked at the Dreamtime compared to the Luxury. I felt that it really was too bulky and cumbersome so went for the Luxury(which I'm delighted with). There seems to be a big difference in size between th 2. Next week I'm off to buy another Luxury and those little clip things that join them together...............not sure what I'm hoping to achieve in two separate sleeping bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the thought that counts, I guess!
