Hi don't know about the scary stories , we have used gas heaters in tents for over thirty years and never had a problem our kids was taught from day one on how to behave in the tent especially around the gas cooker and fire, it also went with the don't touch the outer tent when it rains as it courses the water to seep through, as long as you tell them not to get to close to it, you could put something near it as a no go area ,tents are fairly well ventilated but you should be ok

------------- geoff & annb,--
never lost just on tour
your just jealous of the little voices talking to me
We have a halogen heater which we find does a very good job of warming our tent up. I think we paid £7 for it at a local market and we really pleased with it. It has an automatic cut out if if falls over which I think is invaluable when you've got children, but beware, take a tray to stand it on cos it's cuts out on uneven ground too!

If you have an electric hook-up, we bought a small fan heater from our local electrical store. We only ever have to have it on for 10 minutes at a time. It also acts as a fan in the hot weather. Does not get hot to touch and only cost about £8-10. We have three children, the littlest being 3 and we have never come across any problems.
we have a sungas gas heater works really well takes the chill of the tent uses the small butane gas cylinders,we have a tunnel tent which is very airee wouldnt recomend it for a smaller tent though.
We have a Coleman Black Cat heater - which being flameless is very safe around children and in a tent and it heats up our tent (Khyam XL) very quickly.
Anyone know of a good source for a small halogen heater. Argos have one, but it's too tall. Our local camping store has a smaller one, but it's so flimsy I'd worry about getting it home safe, never mind away on a camping trip.
The best tent heater is lots of jumpers some thermal undewear, a few blankets and a hot water bottle, none of these will leak fumes, cause carbon monoxide poisoning or explode if handled incorrectly.
Lots of people use tent heaters,I'd never let one near my tent but it's your choice.
We got one the the Woolies "Heat and Eat" kits earlier this year. Its one of those single ring cookers which runs on an aerosol type can, and has a heater element which clips onto it which is made a bit like the heater-head of a patio heater. We only use it for a few mins to air the tent on very cold nights, as we are very conscious both of safety issues and the increased condensation that is caused by burning gas (not to mention the environmental cost of using fossil fuels).
I'm with peety on this. Small hot water bottle - in a teddy cover shoved down knickers always works for me! Or, am I on the wrong website?
Nothing worse than being chilly and seriously -plenty of layers of thin clothing, warm socks and the hot water bottle, (but maybe not down their knickers!). Even in a tin tent now I never go anywhere without my hottie. Suppose that's from years under canvas as a child.
You can also get some hand warmers that I've used when fishing shoved in my pockets to keep playing with, (arthritis really feels the cold, poor old soul), and they are brilliant. Son got some really cheap on ebay too! If you're hands and feet are warm, the rest of you seems to follow suit.
If you have an EHU then I could recommend the small oil filled thermostatic radiator from Argos, just under £20. A lot quieter than a fan heater. Only 800W but plenty warm enough, shouldn't impact too much on the ampage / power consumption on EHU.
