If you need more than a 75 Litre Rucsac your almost certainly carrying too much.
You can strap things on the outside but it it just as easy to pack everyting inside a rucsac, with maybe only the sleeping mat and poles on the outside. There are a great many rucsacs that have side straps for attaching poles and mats etc.
The main issue with backpacking is weight, if you worried about the packed size of a sleeping bag, its probably too heavy anyway.
