In France the speed limits are the same for towing as they are for cars

  • Cars towing caravan/trailer not exceeding 750kg 100 (62) on motorways; over 750kg 80 (49) outside built up areas and 100 (62) on motorways. If the total weight of the two vehicles exceeds 3,500kg, the limit outside built-up areas is 60 (37) and 70 (43) on motorways. To tow a caravan/trailer the weight of any caravan/trailer equipped with over-run brakes must not exceed maximum weight of towing vehicle. Driving licence must show entitlement to drive this kind of combination.

    Hope it helps...

    this is the french one..

    • Be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road.
    • Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead.
    • France has strict drink driving laws, blood alcohol levels being stricter than in the UK. Rather than present you with meaningless figures relating to blood/breath alcohol levels, our advice is if you're driving, don't drink.
    • Seat belts front and rear are obligatory everywhere.
    • Speed limits, shown below, are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent. In France, anyone caught travelling at more than 25km/h above the speed limit can have their licence confiscated on the spot.
    • Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines.
    • Replacement bulb set recommended.

A full UK driving licence is required. As in the UK, seat belts should be worn front and rear. Below are motoring regulations relating to France.

Take care in built-up areas where the old rule giving priority to traffic coming from the right (Priorité ŕ droite) still applies unless a yellow diamond indicates you have priority. On roundabouts you generally give priority to traffic already on the roundabout, in other words, coming from your left as you enter the roundabout.

Speed Limits Motorway Open Road Dual Carriageway Town Alcohol % in bloodstream
    France 130 km/h (110 when wet) 90 km/h (80 when wet) 110 (100 when wet) 50 km/h 0.05
    vehicles towing trailers with combination gross weight over 3.5t 110 km/h 50 km/h 100 km/h 50 km/h
    Visiting motorists holding a licence for less than 2 years 110 km/h 80 km/h 100 km/h 50 km/h

    Hi

You're not allowed to use the third lane on a motorway in this country if you're towing.

Whilst the legal limit is of course important, and none of us would consider going over it (well not much anyway), the limiting factor will be the tyres.

Most trailers/TT's & FC's have tyres that are only rated to 62 MPH.  If you have loaded the trailer so that it is at the upper limit of the axle rating, then you may find that the tyre speed rating will be lower.  Best bet is to check with the tyre manufacturers.

    Happy Camping
