I attend country music festivals, so usually camp on rally fields, but some are held in the town parks, so security there is much more of a worry. Although your fellow campers are usually trustworthy souls, and we are all there because we share a common interest, there is the local population to contend with.
At a recent festival in the Midlands, a local youth was spotted walking out of the park with a small tent under his arm - complete with the poles still threaded! Some poor soul will have returned from watching the entertainment, to find their belongings in a heap (unless thay got taken too) and no sign of their tent. By the time security were found, the culprits were long gone.
It's made me slightly more wary about where I camp now, and we always leave valuable items in the car or out of sight.
Hi Leahzleopard, I used to camp with my Mum , many years ago now. Best plan is not to take anything really valuable with you. You won't need jewellery...you're camping remember!! Casual clothes only.
You will probably want to take purse, watch, mobile, maybe small camera. Get one of those " bum bag" type things that will hold all the essentials and keep it with you at all times. If you don't take too much stuff then it will not be too heavy to carry with you. At night have it next to your sleeping bag. If you take a small radio then just take a cheap one , but stick it down in your sleeping bag when you leave the tent.

Get a padlock, put the two zips together, put padlock thru BOTH zips, zips cannot be separated :)
LOL oh so you would have thought!!! This happened to me first ever time I went to a festival. Padlocked the two zips together and went off feeling secure. Came back to find it all still nicely locked up...but with three fellas having a spliff inside!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bizarre!

Maybe they had tunnelled into the gig to get past that gate and happened to come up inside your tent Queeny??!!
Have you considered a rottweiler, at least you'll be able to identify the burglar, he'll be the one limping round the campsite with the torn jeans and blood on his feet.
We use a "PACSAFE" travel safe when we stay in apartments abroad. They are ingenious and would stop anybody half-inching your stuff, however you would find it difficult securing one anywhere in a tent. Another solution is the PACSAFE hip bag (or bumbag). You would have to keep it on you but if you go to the beach / pool etc etc you can secure it to something like a sun-bed, chair, pole etc etc and it cannot be removed - they have stainless steel reinforcing in them and a secure lock. Check out the website. (what i did was to replace the padlock with one with a number combination. That way you can go in the pool without having to worry about finding somewhere to stash the key in your cosi etc)

Lock any valuables in the boot of your car - - be sensible don't leave lots of random stuff lying around.
Campsites are safe places - but use common sense. Locks are no use as anyone with bad intentions can get in your tent with knife or just lifting a peg or two and lifting the canvas. If you lock it all that will happen is you'll give your campsite neighbours a laugh.
I am lucky to have an Autosafe (http://www.autosafe.co.uk/products.htm) in my car which is used for my laptop when I'm working. It's ideal to keep valuables in when travelling.
We kept our passports and video camera etc in there during a recent holiday in France. It's supposedly good for about 30 minutes after a theif gets into your car which is normally long enough to stop them.
...on another thread someone's tent was cut into and had stuff nicked so they'll get in if they want to anyway, Billing has had a lot of problems lately
