We're off to a french campsite for our first camping experience. We're taking a coolbox (12V with mains adaptor), and mostlikely a fan for the heat (ever hopeful!).  The campsite has offered us 6A or 10A.  Now, not being the physics wizz at school I haven't got a clue what an amp is, or how many I'd need.  Has anyone out there got a clue ..... all I can remember is 2 pi R but I don't think that's got anything to do with it....

6 Amp it is then.  I'm sure it won't be too cold so I can leave the fan heater at home!

thanks

 Hi Andrew

If you are not using anything that heats up such as hairdryer, kettle etc then you should be ok with 6 amp. The formula is wattage divided by voltage equals ampage. So a 1200 watt hairdryer divided by 240 volts (as most british equipment is) will use 5 amps. If you only have a cooler box and fan you will be fine with 6 amps but if the cost between the 6 amp and 10 amp is negliigable then go for the 10 amp just to be safe. We are off to France at the end of the week. Enjoy your holiday.

Carol

I can help with that, an amp is;

"The steady current that when flowing in straight parallel wires of infinite length and negligible cross section, separated by a distance of one meter in free space, produces a force between the wires of 2 × 10-7 newtons per meter of length"

Although somehow I guess knowing that wont help you much .....

Someone posted on here that 1 amp is equal to 230 watts which helped us no end in working out what we could run at one time. As for hair straighteners, use gas ones!
