We blew up a single air bed today with a 12v ciggie lighter type in about 2 mins this evening. Not bad going. Dont know how long the battery ones last!!!!
I've got a high gear one which is very good.......well at least, it does the job, not having tried any other ones.
Only cost £6 and plugs into the cig lighter. On out last camping trip with a club we had a queue of people waiting for me to pump up their air beds. I loved watching their facesas they realised how much time I'd saved them, not to mention the energy from not having to use the foot pump!
I've got a foot pump and a battery pump. My stepsister has a 12 volt one which blows up the airbeds in a fraction of the time it takes both mine. I'm going to get one too very soon.
I imagine that a 12v cigarette lighter type would have more power than one running off several 1.5 volt batteries even if 8 were in use giving the same nominal voltage.
thanks for the replies, I suppose it was inevitable.
I'ts just that I bought a battery one, tried it and it took about 20 minutes and even then I had to finish the job with a foot pump as it wasn't blown up properly. So great, I'll take the battery one back and get the cigarette lighter one.

I've got a battery one from Argos, and it pumps up a double airbed in around 2 mins. Admittedly that's with new batteries (alkaline) and I don't know how long they'll last. I went for that option as we'll be in situations where we won't be camped next to the car, so will need a portable pump.
Our little black battery one (deflates brilliantly too) is superb. And you can get in the tent and pump the bed up if it's raining. I refused to be the one to be stood by the car in the rain AGAIN with a cigarette lighter attached thing. It has lasted 5 trips so far (from new) inflating and deflating and pumping up in between and still going strong.

------------- Whoever said drinking & driving don't mix wasn't entirely correct. They mix, just not very well, unless you are looking at driving into a wall & not remembering it the next day, then they mix just fine.
I've just gone for the Gelert rechargeable one (from 12 or 240V). At £20 it was much more than the simple 12V ones but I thought it could be helpful not to have to be next to the car - as long as it still does the job well. I'll find out tomorrow if its any good!
I use one of the 12v ones from argos, blows up a double in about 4 mins, i dont have the problem of power tho as i carry a leisure battery, if im not near the car, i use that ( usualy near the car tho as i have a TT!!!)
