I just need to put my mind at rest.

We are off to France next week (1st time camping abroad) and our gas bottle is fairly low. It's not the camping gaz type, I can't remember what type of gas it is but it cost over £40 (£12 for a refill).

I presume that french campsites sell gas bottles, am i right?

Thanks all

I believe that the French mainly deal with campinggaz bottles, we go on Friday and we have just filled both of our calor ones up so we dont run out.

I have heard a lot of people who go to France and buy a bottle and regulator there, then get the deposit back before they get home.

I have a spare Camping Gaz bottle (a 904 I think) you can have if you live close enough to collect.  I might have a reulator too.  Where abouts are you?

Don't chance using Calor and looking to refill in France - very unlikely you will get it, Calor is typically UK only.  Mostly Campingaz in France.  If you want to try to source a cheap cylinder to take, try your local council recycling depot - they often have Campingaz cylinders for about £3.  If you are lucky, it might even still have gas in!!

Failing that, try pobrey's suggestion and buy a cylinder and regulator in France and trade it before you return - they tend to be cheaper over there and all the supermarkets sell them.

Thanks all, it looks like I have 1 more thing to add to my list of things to do before we go away.

Steven thanks for the offer, I'm in the midlands and you are in north yorkshire so a little too far, but thanks again.

We normally use Camping Gaz 904 in England and France to run a Cadac but I believe that this size bottle is being phased out.  Rather than be stuck without gas we are going to buy a french bottle and regulator which will then do us for our annual trips to France.

I came back from France this time last week. We use Campingaz cylinders, two 907s.French campsites and most of the bigger French supermarkets stock Campingaz refills and both 904 and 907s were plentiful. I even saw a few 901s.

You don`t buy them in the garage area, btw, but inside the supermarket, at either the camping section or the barbecue area. You can buy full ones, or  take your empty one in with you in the trolly, pick up a full one and they`ll do the swop at the checkout. Refill price for a 907 varied from 13.40 Euros to around 17 Euros. Cheaper than here.
