We've got a Campingaz stove with grill thingy on order.  Can anyone shed any light about gas cylinders?  I've seen the threads about picking one up at your local tip, but we wouldn't be able to fit one of those big ones in the car - so, although more expensive in the long run, we'll have to use the smaller canisters.

Does the same apply here - do you buy a small one, and then have to take it to a local supplier who will swap it for a full one, or are the smaller canisters "disposable"?

Any help appreciated!  I'm a newbie on this gas lark!

I'm not sure that you can use the disposable ones on a stove like this...becaus eyou need a regulator...!

The gas bottles aren't that big..I think ours is only about 12" tall and we store it on the floor in the back of the car...with all the other bits that I've forgotton..!

I haven't ever seen a disposible one that the regulator with fit on...The only screw in ones I've seen have had too small a thread...and i don't think that they would hold enough gas to be of any real use..

Have a look on the Camping Gaz site and you will see the various cylinder sizes.  The biggest is the 907 and as Taviour said it is not that big. There are smaller ones but I heard mentioned they were to be phased out, don't know if that is right.

If you want to go abroad you will need Camping Gaz, but if only planning to use here then Calor is cheaper on the refills.Their small cylinder is maybe a little bigger than the 907, but they have changed a bit in the last few years so I may be a bit out of date.  A Calor dealer will advise you and you can also check on their website.

I have seen regulators for threaded diposal cannisters. The pressure was 28mBar, this equals the energy output at Propane at 37 mBar, or in other words, you may use the equipment on the standard system you already have.

There is Camping Gaz and Calor Gas. The Gaz bottles are smaller and have a screw socket in the top, except the very small 206 bottles. These are the hand sized bottles used for little stoves or lamps.

There are 901, 904, and 907 bottles which are of different sizes. It really depends how much cooking you plan to do but the 907 should last you 2 weeks. I know a Scout leader who gives a 907 bottle to each patrol on his annual camps and they come back about half full after a week. The 907 should be OK for what you want and they are easy to find if you run out.

The Blue Butane Calor bottles come in 4.5kg, 7kg, and 15kg which are much bigger and take up much more space. These tend to be more common for caravans etc where they can be carried in gas lockers etc.

With all bottles you have to put a deposit down on the original, then you just pay for the refil and exchange an empty bottle for a full bottle. If you can find a bottle first you have your deposit. Doesn't matter if it's propane or butane you can exchange for what you want, but may have to may a bit extra if you go up a size.

Isn't a lot of difference in size between a Campingaz 907 and a Calor (or cheaper version) 4.5 Kg.

Campingaz - In between the piercable disposable 206, and the 901 etc which need regulators, are the re-sealable but still disposable CV 270 & CV 470 sizes, which some of the larger lamps and single burners, e.g. the Party Grill use.
