As you will see from my previous posts I am very new to camping, 2 weeks in cornwall and now hooked. I have just bought a Campingaz Camping Chef Cooker (we had a great little Uno stove but would like something a bit bigger) but it does not come with a regulator, (it does inc hose and jubilee clips). I am a bit confused about this as there seems to be different styles, can anyone help??

Many thanks

ruby....

you need a standard regulator, such as this http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/pp/Caravanning/Gas_Management/Regulator_Calor_4.5kg.html

this one is for a butane gas supply (very important that you get the correct match).

its blue for butane and red for propane.  the difference i believe is that propane burns at a hotter temperature and is easier to ignite in colder conditions.

however i use a propane reg. with a 907 gas cannister on my campinggaz camping chef. dont be fooled into buying one of the over priced campingaz gaz cannisters and regulator

right it depends on the gas bottle you have, is it a calor or camping gaz? even between calor bottles the type of regulator changes, even so they only cost around £7

camping gaz is butane. Officially one has to use Camping gaz regulators, but as it is butane, it should function with a normal butane regulator. However, the connections of bottle to regulator are totally different. Normal butane regulators e.g. have a larger threading than CC, wich has a finer threading, plus CC is 'screw in', while normal butane is 'screw on' with some type of nut, which is screwed 'around' the connection, . Sorry If i use the wrong words, but I am Dutch.
Also normal butane bottles have a tap to close them. This way you close the bottle e.g. during transport. Camping gaz has a ball system. Screwing in the regulator immediately opens the gasbottle by pushing the ball aside. To close the bottle during transport the regulator has to be taken off.

So the point is, did you just buy a CC cooker, in which case you may connect any butane bottle to it with proper regulator. Or did you also buy a Camping gaz bottle, in which case you will be forced to use the Camping Gaz regulator. Which, by the way will last for ages.

The difference between butane and propane:
butane has a higher density, i.e. more calaries for the same quantity. But it stops performing at around 4 degrees centigrade.
propane has a slightly lower density/less calories per same quantity, but performs until around minus 30 degrees, therefore also in autumn, spring and winter. it operates at a higher pressure, this way the cooker in fact it will perform the same as butane as it just gets a bit more propane supplied.
These there there are multipurpose regulators, allowing for both butane and propane, functioning at an intermediate pressure of 30 Mbar. (28 normal for butane, 37 or near that for propane). The nozzle in the cooker may make a diference, but normally can be replaced.

its up to you really but the info you have is biased as the cooker is made buy camping gaz so guess which bottle and gas they want you to use?  both the ones you have stated are butane not propane. they are camping gaz bottles, you pay a fortune to hire the bottle and then buy the gas when you exchange it so it works something like this, you pay about £30 for the bottle plus another £12 for the gas the first time, once empty you only pay another £12 for the gas, but these bottles are often found at car boot sales or in free ads etc for a lot less, if you choose to use calor then the gas is less expensive and you get a bit more in the bottle than camping gaz once you have decided how and where you can get your bottle from then you will need the correct regulator for that bottle

> either Butane 904 or propane 907!!! <

Which implies that the cooker (in fact the nozzle) is prepared for both butane and propane. Just choose whichever will be more convenient for you.

The types of bottles mentioned puzzle me a bit. The difference between 904 and 907 is the actual quantity: soemting like 1.8 kgs of v. 2.7 kgs of gas. Both bottles exist in butane. Maybe camping gaz supplies propane only in a 904 bottle? Their website only refers to butane. Only the C206 disposable cartridge is supplied in butane ans well as butane/propane mix.

This is on their site:
> Gas assortment
Campingaz® cartridges and cylinders are filled with 3 gases: Butane, Propane, and Isobutane. The proportion depends on the model:

- Cylinders R 901, R 904, R 907: 100% Butane;
- Cartridges C 206: 80% Butane & 20% Propane, or 100% Butane;
- Aerosol cartridges CG 1750 & CG 3500: 70% Butane and 30% Propane;
- Valve cartridges CV 270 & CV 470: 80% Butane & 20% Propane;
- Aerosol valve cartridge CV 360: 100% Butane;
- Aerosol cartridge CP 250: 100% Isobutane. <

Ruby, having asked a very similar question myself see this thread , got quite a lot of info concerning the gas, and cannister types/regulators. (Thanks again to those that replied)

What I would suggest is that you think about how much room you have when packing, and how much gas you will need to use whilst 'away'. Then you can make an informed decision as to which type of gas bcannister/regulator to buy. Please be aware a butane regulator won't go on all butane cannisters !! (I have friends who turned up this year with a new cannister that they had taken to the shop and swapped their empty one for...only to find that their regulator didn't match the 'new' cannister  Fortunatly, the nice man that runs the site, had a spare cannister that they used for the duration)

I actually went to a local camping retailer, and got the cannister, regulator and additional hose at a 'package' price, so look out for that sort of thing, if you don't find a spare at the tip (or similar!)

Hope this helps.
