They are fibreglass poles with a thin polyester film which probably does little more than stop them shattering into shards.

As soon as I got ours home I managed to split a pole just in getting it out of the bag.  Granted, the tent was ex-demo but it had only been erected 3 weeks or so inside a warehouse.  With a bit of persuasion, Coleman sent me a replacement pole.

North Wales just a couple of weeks ago and one night was so windy I was really fearing the worst, but the Wyoming stood up to it well.  Bit of advice though- ditch the feeble plastic rings that the guys are attached to and use bowline's instead.

An American friend of mine ditches the guy sliders as well and ties some sort of adjustable knot that just never seems to loosen up like sliders do.
I always intend asking him how to tie it but then we get to drinking and...

Probably a rolling hitch. Very handy for extempore guys.Check out:

http://www.tollesburysc.co.uk/Knots/Rolling_hitch.htm

Think of the red part & the blue part as all one guy. The left end of the red would be connected to tent.
The lower blue part would go round the peg and become the right end of the red.
The two turns in the blue stop the knot from pulling back.

Hope this helps
