We are looking for a camp light which gives out a light you can actually see with and doesn't have to be plugged into a car battery.  My mother had a camping gaz lantern years ago which wasn't bad for light but the mantles kept shattering.  Anyone have any recommendations.  The two battery lights we have now are pathetic and the batteries don't last for long.

Ring had some LED lamps with their torches at the Go Outdoors show today.
Nice and bright, and you can adjust them down, by turning off LEDs if you find them too bright.
Their website isn't up and running yet (they said) so try asking at your local camping shop - or look them up and phone they're in Leeds I believe.

We replaced our expensive rechargeable lantern which gave out a feeble light with a Camping Gaz 206 lantern. Very pleased with it and no problems with the mantles - the same mantle has lasted us for three camping holidays.

You could always take the pressure paraffin route. Lanterns such as these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TILLEY-STORM-LAMP-X246B-BOXED-NEW-OLD-STOCK-COMPLETE_W0QQitemZ5288630250QQcategoryZ36112QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-BOXED-VAPALUX-LANTERN-M320-KEROSENE-TILLEY-LAMP_W0QQitemZ5277375638QQcategoryZ36112QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

are robust, easy to maintain with spares readily available, economical to run and dish out a useful amount of heat. Of the two and indeed pressure lanterns in general, Vapalux are considered to be the best.

On the downside they require priming with spirit (easier with the Vapalux) as part of the lighting process so instant light isn't an option with these but once lit they will burn continuous for 12+ hours on a couple of pints of paraffin

Hi

We've got a Camping Gas lantern as well and have found it really good our mantle lasted for 2 years before we had to change it, but we keep spares with us just in case.

I have a camping gaz lantern and spare mantles plus I think a couple of cartridges - yours for a tenner if you're interested!

And I have used the same mantle for over a year now. If you pack it carefully and also don't touch it when you light it, it should be fine.

Madelinew , thank you for your kind offer.  I have packed up the tent (after a windy weekend in Rosemarkie last week!) for the year and will probably look around for a light in the Spring, thanks anyway.  and thanks to all who took the trouble to reply
