Now that the nights are closing in I was thinking about taking our portable 240v television on our next camping trip. Would this be ok on sites with electric hook up or is it likely to trip the fuse. I know you can buy the low voltage camping televisions but they do tend to be expensive. Just wondered if I could save a few pounds by using the family portable. I would not be using it with the leisure battery, just with the campsite electric hook up.

It really shouldnt be a problem on any sites, the thing that normally fuses the EHUs is high wattage kettles.

Hi, i was also wondering if it would be ok to take a normal tv away with us and use it on a hookup.  Pleased that Stuart asked the question, as now i know.

But if you have the tv on do you have to turn something off?  Most likely we will have the tv on (at night), electric blow heater and now and again a 12volt kettle also the 12volt fridge.  Do you think this would be ok?

TV should be fine is it really a 12 v kettle? most aren't. Check the hookup rating 10 amps will let you use 2kw easily so so long as you only have one "heating" thing on at a time you'll be fine.

Wildie if you can fit in the car........................................you'll provide on site entertainment and no one will need a telly.

Thanks for your replies, will take portable tv this weekend and try it out. We are visiting Cannock Chase, Staffordshire. Not been there before, hoping to do some walking and cycling in the day, will try the tv in the evening with a couple of bottles of wine and some supper, bliss.

I doubt the kettle is 12v, or the fridge, do you mean one of those electric coolboxes possibly?  You need a low wattage kettle, ordinary household ones use too much.

TVs use very little power, maybe 50-90 watts, fridge also uses very little.  Heater can be 1 or 2 kw usually, small kettle 800 watts.   On 16amp EHU you could use them all together, on 10amp turn down the heating before switching on the kettle.

A 10 amp EHU will provide 2,300 watts (10 x 230v). Add up the power consumption of the appliances (usually marked on them somewhere) and make sure you don't go over that and it will be ok, but do watch out for some things which need more current to power up when first switched on. High draw appliances are usually ones involving heat e.g. heater, kettle, iron, hairdrier, as a rule of thumb, only use one of these at a time and it should be ok.

I run a portable tv ,3kw fan heater(like it hot on cold nights)a lamp plus a strip light,I do switch off the fan heater when I boil the kettle,have four phones and a camera on charge.Also when we have the awning up I have one of those Halogen heaters going full belt as well,

am I tempting fate or been lucky so far,use to run this lot in our tent too

Hi, cabra you use a lot, so ours should be ok.

The fridge is the one that came with the FC, its the proper fridge one.  Will try it out in the half term

I am really new to this game - to put in simple language - can I use - all be it not at once - my normal electric kettle and toaster from home or do I need special camping models

P.S. - will this all work in france?
