Getting ready for next year's campling holidays and, of course December is the best time to buy so I would like some advice please. Simple question really - What's best 12 volts or mains.
I'm thinking of running a fridge/coolbox, lighting and a small heater for those chilly evenings
Could someone give me the pros and cons of either or both, eg if I go for 12 volts should I take a spare car battery etc???
You won't get much useful cooling from the coolbox on 12v, this is mainly just to maintain a coolness whilst driving. Mains is best but gas is also good if you have a three way box.
An average battery will last the week, pos two if in good condition for just lighting.
As you don't pay a great deal more for EHU then go for that and save your gas for cooking.
We went on our first ever caravan club centre rally back in september and the thought of being in a caravan with three kids (youngest 1yr, eldest 5yrs) WITHOUT telly or microwave was daunting to say the least. However, we survived perfectly weel with the fridge and water heater on gas and the battery for the lights etc. and it was nice to be "telly free" for a change. If you have access to mains electric then all well and good but why not try "without" once in a while?
Your fridge will flatten your battery in less than 24 hrs, did it myself when we had an old static without electric, you only use it on 12 volts while travelling, so if you want to run a fridge and a heater I would go for EHU, if your buying a fridge I would go for the 3 way fridge then your not limited with your options later, if you want to stay on none electric pitches/sites. There's a gas heater that screws into the top of the campinggas 907 cylinder thats about 20 pounds and the gas lanters about the same price as well so you have plenty of options.
We have used 12v and gas lighting for best part of 10yrs now without ever having a flat battery, also to the list we've charged phone and camera batteries and ran a small b/w tele all from the car battery as well, but I must admit that if you are looking for a heater or a fridge then go for mains as they are real energy sappers.
But you dont need mains electric to have a good camping holiday and you can use all the extra £2.50's for something better
I agree with most of the above. If you have the choice then fit as many options as are available to you. We have mains and 12v , but of course if you have the first then the second is (almost) automatic. This plus gas cooking. We use halogen bedside lights on 12v so they will be available in the event of no mains. We don't use a fridge, but low fat spreads and powdered milk. What else goes in a fridge you cannot get every day fresh?
