Hi,

New to caravanning anf this year looking at going on first rallys etc.

Anyway, waste water collectors,  are they a must for hygiene and rally rules as seen other caravans without them, waste water poors into the group

Thanks

Scott

When we're on a site we use a waste container but when on a rally/farmers field we don't bother!

We always use ours.  But I must admit it has over flowed a couple of times.

I have heard of some people using a perforated pipe laid under the caravan. This traps any large pieces in the waste, to be washed out later. It also dampens the grass under the'van so it doesn't dry out and saves an awful lot of work. Never used such a thing myself but I have been told it's very good.

I have been told on some sites/rallies to let the waste on to the ground in hot dry weather, but unless told to do that I always use a waste container (apart from when on a serviced pitch like at Townsend where there are drains sunk into the grass).

I would say that you should always collect your waste water and dispose of it in an appropriate place.  We would certainly not want to use a pitch where the previous occupant had let the waste water just pour out onto the ground.

I appreciate you are asking about rallies, I think you should ask the organisers or the land-owner.

Most caravanners expect to have to collect waste water and dispose of it responsibly.

Should dispose of waste water in the correct manner collected in a suitable container even if just a bucket (and taken to the grey waste disposal point). Imagine how smellly it could get in Summer if it never rained - even in an open field. Still, not much chance of no rain in uk - lol

We stopped on a site in France where the previous occuapants had 'bucketed and chucked it' in the ditch behind the pitch. We were over run with cockroaches (yuk!!!) and it stunk. Yak.

Responsible caravanners will collect waste water and dispose of it responsibly.  Surely no one wants to arrive on a pitch that's covered in grey waste and buzzing with flies.

There is of course the option (if told to let it on to the ground) of an empty 2 litre plastic bottle with the bottom cut off, turned upside down & filled with grass (changed daily), the water is drained through the bottle and the grass traps the smelly bits.

We always use our waste containers. If you had a tent would you like it if the person on the pitch before you had let their waste run straight onto the floor where you were going to put your tent. What if you put your caravan the opposite way round to the last one and your child was playing in the area they had left their waste.

Always use some sort of waste receptacle, whether on a site or on a farmers rally field. Bear in mind rally fields are often used more than once in a year (some almost every weekend it seems) and it's not nice for anyone else using the field. Also bear in mind that animals may graze the field after the rally-goers have left. Detergent, soap etc can seep through the ground and find their way into water courses, causing pollution. You might think (well just a few litres in a huge field...) but bear in mind some club rallies can have anything up to 100 units & more attending.

Anyway, what exactly is wrong with using a waste receptacle? The people that don't are just being thoughtless/lazy. It's not much work to empty a bucket or container in an appropriate place (on rallies there should be a chemical emptying pit dug if the farmer doesn't already have a man-hole to chuck waste down. Mind you we have been on a rally where the farmer left a slurry wagon on the field to empty everyone's loos into, and he then presumably just spread it on his fields, or maybe he took it away for disposal properly?).

As for what type of waste container, a slide under tank may be necessary if your caravan has low ground clearance, or you might wish for a wheeled tank to make trips to empty a bit easier. Otherwise a simple bucket is sufficient - & necessary in winter (so you can empty the frozen block of waste water out easily!)
