If you still want to continue with airbeds, then there isn't much that betters the Coleman Comfort beds.  I have never had to top ours up ever.  They have a double valve seal so unless there is a puncture, they wont go down.  Also remember that changes in temperature will make a bed feel softer or harder.

We've just bought Elektra self inflating airbeds and they are fantastic.  They take 4 "D" batteries and inflate in 1 minute. They also have a built in foot (or hand!) pump so you can pump an extra bit in if you like your bed firm.

We got them from Towsure.com and we're really really pleased with them.

I once decided to repair our old leaking fabric covered box air bed, blew it up hard and covered it in soapy water to see where the air was bubbling out, turned out it was leaking slowly at the corners and repeated folds , so I circled the leaks with a crayon then laid it out in the hot sun to dry off before putting some glue on.

BANG BANG!

Was that a car backfiring a few times, no it was the hot sun heating up the already fully loaded airbed and the interconecting bits that dimple in blowing. this completely buggered the thing and gave it a huge bulge that couldnt be repaired, spent some time blowing a few more connectors off  by bouncing my child off it when jumping on and then threw it away.

if putting one in the sun let a good bit of air out.
