Hello!
Finally got our trailer sorted ... mostly!

Just been and paid for an Erde 122 with ABS lid. Trailer half price at Halfords.

BUT...Do we need a spare wheel? or a jockey wheel? Didn't realise it didn't come with Jockey wheel. Are there any problems with packing or hitching up the thing when it's pretty heavily packed with camping kit?

Thanks in advance!

With a small trailer just make sure that you distribute the weight evenly and the low weight over the hitch will make it easy to manoeuvre.

Me bought one too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good offer, had to chase round Norfolk for it though.

I did buy a spare wheel as I thought it was important, didn't buy the bracket for securing it though, that seemed a bit over the top I'm sure it will fit in the boot, it's only small. Also bought soft cover and lock for hitch, the whole lot was less than £250 and I'm going to use the £10 voucher they gave me to buy the number plate, not bad eh.

I didn't both with the jockey wheel, £50 seemed a bit steep! I only intend to use it for camping and can't really see the point of this, we can load/unload the heavy stuff whilst it is on the tow bar, or am I missing something too?

Yes you do need a spare wheel (not a legal requirement) but we got our Erde last year and set off for cornwall at 5.30 am, 15 mins on the road we passed a caravan with a flat tyre, 5 mins later someone flashed us and when we pulled over our tyre was shredded, must have been something on the road i guess. we hadnt even noticed any difference.

At 6 in the morning there arent many tyre places open and not everywhere will stock this size anyway so be safe rather than sorry.

Marie

P.S we havent found the need for a jockey wheel yet but maybe when we have some spare cash will get one.

I would always take a spare wheel with me its like insurance its a pain until you need it then your glad you had it. Just make sure you have a jack and wheelbraace to fit the trailer as most cars now have a jack that will only fit that car, i take a cheep sissor jack, plus the wheel nuts on most trailers are smaller than those on your car.

The jockey wheel i can live without plus this makes sure you do not exceed the nose weight as with a jockey wheel this is esy to do.

Thanks for the advice about the jack Passmaster.

Hadn't even thought of that, trying to be prepared and sometimes the obvious just passes you by, think I've got an old scissor jack in the shed, must dig it out.

I keep telling the wife that all that 'old junk' in the shed will come in useful one day!!

Spare wheel a must... just in case.  Bulbs?  Are the bulbs in the lighting board the same as the car?  Worth buying a couple.  Jockey wheel not really needed but they can be picked up cheap enough from various places like EBay.   Also..... small trailers can be hard to manouvre  i.e reversing.  If you can't see it when you're backing up it may have turned a lot by the time it does appear in your wing mirror and amost 'jacknife'    Consider adding something to the width or height so you can see it all the time when driving.  It adds to the confidence knowing that after covering a hundred miles or so it'll be there at your destination with you!!!!  Finally... don't forget a breakaway cable if it hasn't got one.

For anyone thinking about buying a trailer for camping.... the best money you'll ever spend.  I bought mine years ago for the ever increasing 'tip runs' and its done a LOT of miles now.  If you think you'll only ever use it a couple of times a year, believe me it'll get more use than that!  Also, get as big a trailer as you can for your money.  Mine is only 4' x 3'   I've made a frame to drop on top with a hinged lid that we can strap the kiddies bikes to.  We're off to France in July and I hope to have built a bigger one by then.  We always seem to fill it though it's not necessarily heavy.
