Does anyone know if it is OK to store a gas bottle on its side when not in use? I want to carry an extra Calor bottle in my camper van, but it will only fit in the under-seat locker lying on its side.
I believe that the caravan gas systenm uses gas from the top of the liquid gas contained in the bottle, and should be used upright. A gas powered vehicle (fork lift) uses the liquid, which is why it needs a vaporizer before it can be used in the engine. I'm not an expert but I would be very wary of tipping the bottle on it's side in a caravan situation. Surely the caravan manufacturers would have a more efficient way of storing them if you could just tip them any which way
As said in previous posts, I am no expert but I think storing the bottle on its side is probably OK, but do not use it this way, always have it in an upright position,

If you store any gas cannister on its side then you must ensure it's well secured. If the valve goes it'll take off like a rocket. It should be secured even when it's stood up to stop it getting knocked over.
Never use whilst on its side. Very dangerous.

I once had a small calor gas bottle with a valve jammed in the open position so had to let it empy . turned on its side or upside down the liquid gas comes out and as a consequence a lot mor gas gets out at a far greater rate as it changes to gas instantly in normal atmospheric pressure.
I personally wouldnt store gas canisters on their side and most definately wouldnt attempt to use one sideways.
Thanks for all the advice. I'll rig up a retaining strap to hold the bottle securely whilst storing it on its side. Leaving the bottle 5 minutes after turning it upright before use sounds like a very good idea too.
I saw a safety film a few years ago where one of the large gas cannisters (6 foot high) was stored on its side and some one accidently knocked the valve off. It took off like a torpedo and went through four 40' containers before it stopped !! Tony
BEWARE!
If you try to use a normal propane or butane bottle on its side there is a great danger of liqiud gas flowing along the tube and causing the appliance to flare up!
Forklift truck gas cylinders also use liquid gas but are designed to operate on their side. Even so, there are arrows on the bottom of the cylinder showing the correct orientation of the cylinder.

Ive always stored my 7kg butane bottles on thier side in my trailer box as theres no room to stand them upright & close the box lid. I,ve never had any problems with doing so. I always use them standing upright though & the trailer box lid being half ajar gives a reassuring sense of it all being ventilated properly. Even though gas sinks !!!! Its a strange world is,nt it
