Hi.  I have a Combicool and grill/hob that use Butane (that's what the camping store sold me).  I have just bought a gas BBQ for home use and the regulator it came with says Propane on it.

Q1) What is the difference between Propane and Butane ?

Q2) Can I use my Camping Gaz butane with a home garden gas BBQ ?

Thanks !

Hi 5 man tent

Butane comes in a blue bottle and propane in a red one, butane is ok in tempratures from about 5 degrees but propane can be used in minus temprature so if your going camping in the winter it better to use propane, saying that though I used butane in feb and was ok but it wasnt seriously freezing.

You can use your camping gas butane on the gas BBQ but you will need a camping gas regulator, we tend to have all our gas equipment using the same regulator, so if you run out you can swap bottles about and the camping gas 907 bottle is a good size and fits in bucket with lid.

Hope this helps

Simplistically; Butane (blue) for Spring to Autumn use, and Propane (red) for Winter use. If you use the search engine there is a lot more explanation as to why.
You must have the correct regulator for each type of gas. They are not interchangeable.
Regulators are "normally" fitted at the bottle end, so appliances "may" use both types of gas, but if your BBQ has a propane regulator built in, you will have to use propane. Check with the manufacturers, or suppliers to be safe.
Jim.

There's no difference in safety with either gas.  Which to use is normally down to the temperature.  We use propane as we go away in winter and can't be bothered swapping over!  In newer caravans, etc, the regulator is fixed and will work with either gas, but the 'pigtail' between the regulator and the bottle is different for propane and butane.
