just started getting camping gear together and have everything for electric hook up site but am a bit nervous about buying a cooker for when we go to non-ehu site.
we've been recommended a meths burner as opposed to gas.
we have 4 kids and am worried if they fiddle.
been looking on-line and found the triangia meths sets up.
what do you guys and gals think?
and will i blow myself up using it?
We use one of those single gas burners that come in a case. The gas cartridge looks like an aerosol can and fits into the unit. There is a leaver that engages the gas and an ignition so no fiddling to light it.We didn't want to use a stove with a gas bottle mainly because of the size and find the burner adequate for kettle and saucepan/fryingpan type cooking.
Very important: keep kids well away when cooking, straight-jackets work well I believe.
Now I'll suggest something that will probably get shot down in flames (no pun intended) because you have little ones to consider. Have a look at the Coleman double burner. It runs on unleaded petrol and is very powerful. Dangerous? Yes, but only if don't use common sense, and no more so than meths.
i have 5 "fiddlers", 5 mths, 3 1/2 years, 6 years, 9 years and 28years.
not unduelly worried just a niggle in the back of my mind. silly things have happened in this house hold. we have a mr nobody in our house, and he can get up to alot of things, even things kids can't do.
Know what you mean though, any of our cupboards that contained anything remotely hazardous/dangerous had locks on them for years to keep three sets of inquisitive, sticky little fingers out.
I would also have a look a the Coleman dual fuel. It packs away when it is not being used. My youngest daughters nickname is fidler the fidler but we have had no problems with this cooker. Ours came from the car boot. There have been loads of threads about this cooker so it is worth doing a search and seeing what other peeps think.
Hi Hazel, if you go for gas then you at least know that if you disconnect the regulator it will be off and there will be no spillage or leakage of any kind (gas wise anyway). Here's a basic 2 ring from Argos Or 2 rings and a grill
The only safer way than this for cooking is to buy takeaway food.
I'd personally recommend gas, and twin burners is more convenient than a single burner - just be careful not to leave it unattended when lit and if you think there's a risk of them turning the gas on at the stove or the regulator then just disconnect the regulator from the bottle.
I tried to cook sausages for 2 on a meths burner this morning, took best part of an hour, you dont have time to spend that long cooking if you have 4 fiddlers to keep an eye on. Go gas.
