I've jus bought a double burner stove having moved up from single camping gaz arrangements and want to use a larger bottle.

I have a big butane Calor Gas bottle for my patio barbeque and recently was given an empty 4.5kg butane Shell Gas bottle. I thought I could swap it for a full one and avoid the bottle deposit.

But I notice that the top of the Shell Gas bottle is different to the Calor Gas and the regulator on the Calor Gas won't fit the Shell gas.

Do Shell still do bottle gas?

Have I just got an old bottle?

Would I be better of getting a 4.5 Calor Gas.

What happens when I'm in France or Spain and I run out?

Will I ned a different regulaor Or will the UK one fit?

I don't know anything about Shell Gas, but Calor Gas is difficult to find in France & Spain, although Camping Gaz is available everywhere over there. Hope this helps a bit, but I'm sure someone will be able to advise you regarding the Shell Gas query later today

I opted for the campingaz bottles as they are available almost everywhere in europe, which makes it so much easier to change when camping in France. I dont want to carry two bottles or regulators and have to be burdened with paying for a new bottle if calor runs out.

Hope this helps

I would check out your tip or car boot sales or ebay for a used Camping Gaz bottle 904 or the bigger 907 and get the CG regulator for your double burner. They are more portable than the Calor 4.5 and widely available abroad. We use a couple of 904s so always have one spare and they dont take up much room in the car. Check out the sizes on the CG website.

Shell don't charge deposits on their bottles.

But I notice that the top of the Shell Gas bottle is different to the Calor Gas and the regulator on the Calor Gas won't fit the Shell gas.

Do Shell still do bottle gas?

Yes - well, the ones just down the road from me do. It's quite well priced from what I remember.

But you do need a Shell regulator as, as you've found, Calor ones don't fit Shell bottles.

They're not expensive though.

And no, as far as I know just liek Calor, they're not available abroard.

I'd heard somewhere (poss on here?) that Campingaz were dropping the 904's, presumably because of lack of demand for them - although smaller than the 907 they are still the same diameter so still take up almost same space & hold less gas - do you know if that's correct or are they still generally available?
