For windbreak poles and for when the ground is really hard, and for some pegs where the end is not so smooth ( I have some I can't describe that are good pegs but not kind to rubber mallets), I'd recommend a substantial wooden mallet. A rubber mallet has too much bounce so you lose some of the energy you need to get the windbreak pole/peg into the ground, and the head tends to get mauled.
I've also just bought a metal handled substantial rubber mallet (head of my old one getting a bit mauled now) from Poundland for £1.
The two together are an excellent combination. Oh, and I don't like the peg-puller as part of the mallet, better to have a separate one of those.
