Hi,

Im considering moving away frm my cottonised rubber airbed to one of these new fangled self inflating camping mats, but Im wondering whether they'll be as comfortable, or as warm...

How much should I be paying for one - Im a fair old lump of a fella and camp from Easter through to October. Plus..... it has to be able to fold downm small to be carried on a toast rack sized motorbike rack or in teardrop style soft panniers

Can anyone comment?

All input gratefully received!!!!

i have a thermarest prolite 4 which folds down smaller than a sleeping bag.but its dear £75.00.i use it for wild camping.alpkit.com do mats too.i ahve the fat airic which is 7 cm thick and very comfy but very big when rolled up.they also do 2 other sizes.thermarests do other sizes too which roll up to the size of a foam sleep mat.for me ,self inflating mats are the best.by the way i,m 17 stone and i find them very comfy.

it depends how thick the mat is.the thinest mat i have is 4cm and i cant feel the floor through it.i have a 5 cm mat too and that is luxury but that would be too big for your bike.

We have bought some of these mats from here, they are a lot cheaper than Thermarests but aren't quite as light and don't pack down as small.

I believe they are warmer than airbeds as they form an insulating barrier between the ground and the user. The air inside would still get cold as in an airbed but as there isn't much air in them it shouldn't be as noticeable.

We use Thermarests and find them to be extremely comfy. We can never feel the floor and they are nice and warm even if it's absolutely freezing. Most of the time we sleep directly on the mat as we open up our sleeping bags and use them like a duvet - no need for any additional blankets etc.

Try this my pal has one and I'm getting one this weekend, they roll down smaller than a roll-mat and aren't much heavier.
