We are novices to camping and will be going on our first holiday in July to Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby. My husbands concern is the security of the tent whilst we are out exploring. We are really looking forward to our holiday and would hate for anything to spoil it. Do we need to take any precautions.
we put anything of value in the car(hidden of corse) if we are off out for the day. apart from that i used to use a money belt but give it up ages ago.only had one thing go missing i 11 years and we think it blew away so no problem .dont worry .just abit of common sense you will love it . have a nice time
Apart from the obvious to do with your valuables i dont think theres a lot to do because if somebody wants to have a snoop around theres not alot you can do.
If you have neighbours then maybe have a word with them to keep a look out if they wouldnt mind
on my first trip I bought some of those little suitcase locks to lock the zips together thinking if someone were to be a bit iffy and they couldnt just unzip the tent it would attract attention and they would just move off.
I keep valuables (wallet etc) with me all the time. Otherweise i have not really bothered, nothing has been nicked yet. I also get chatting to the neighbours - even if it is just small talk, then they know who you are and if anyone is hanging around your tent then they will know.

If its nice weather I always leave our tent open to let some air in, if someone wants to go in your tent they will, and if you put a lock on they may think theres something worth nicking and just slash the tent to get in, we lock anything valuable in the boot and weve never had an problems, everybody on the campsite is in the same boat so tend to look out for each other.
Never had anything pinched until this weekend - we had one of those shepherds hook things to hang a lantern on and some bugger must have taken a liking to it !!! It only cost £3 but it really annoyed me that someone would just take it !
Please don't foret people - for those that hill walk or climb - it you're off out hiking please let someone know on site - probably reception when you plan to be back, incase of accidents. Ask them then to keep an eye on the tent when they're around that area - toilet cleaning or whatever.
Someone can then raise the alarm if you're not back.
Slightly ot, I know, but always a useful reminder.
I camp very regularly and have never had anything stolen. Camping in the country is fine, people do look out for one another. However if you are camping within a large town or city, I have known plenty of people who have had things nicked.
DON'T lock your tent. The cost of replacing the tent is as much if not more than any valuables you take camping and a locked tent encourages people to slash through. The best advice though is camp regularly then everthing you take with you looks worn in and no-one wants it (even though you know all your stuff has just been broken in).
Has anyone tried those fake 'tins' of beans and spaghetti etc, which are actually for hiding valuables? Spotted them in a camping shop last week and just wondered if anyone has tried them?
