Can anybody help! We have a low level rear cycle carrier and have ordered a camping trailer from towsure. Is it possible to use the cycle carrier when towing. We are a family of 5, 2 cycles go on the roof and 3 on the carrier.
If we can't use the rear carrier, any advice on transportation would be appreciated.
on some trailers you can get cycle racks you can add on top of the trailer, not sure if towsure do them for theres give them a ring they will be able to help you.
Hi, we have just brought a trailer and at the same time we got a new cycle carrier which fits onto the tow bar and can be used at the same time as the trailer. Absolutely brilliant holds three cycles and can be fitted in two minutes. Same for when you want to store it. We got ours from our local car accessory place but I've also seen them in camping shops. Cost about £30 and well worth every penny.
There's a 3 cycle carrier manufactured by Maypole, that can be used whilst towing. All you do is fit the supplied plate between the towing bracket and the tow ball (you might need to buy a couple of longer bolts) and the carrier drops into the recess.
We got ours from a cycle shop in Northampton but I've seen them elsewhere. There's a couple of versions of it in the Towsure catalogue.
Hi. i bought a trailer from halfords last year (they had it in stock and built it for me!) and then purchased the roof bars that fit on top. You can then just use standard bike racks that normally fit on top of cars. This is very stable and the bikes are extremely easy to fit on to the rack. You can also use the rack to carry other items too when not taking the bikes. The roof bars that are made for the trailer actually strengthen the trailer sides so weight should not be an issue.
Hi I have just read your message Jules4 about your trailer from halfords and the load bars. Could you please let me know if your trailer was an Erddie make, as this is what i have with a hard cover fitted, and was looking at these type of bars, but cant find out if when you fit them to the trailer they have to go in a set position, or if you can alter the spacing of them. Also what is the quality like, how many bikes can they take, are they easy to fit, and have they gone rusty yet. I would very much appreciate any info you might have, if you can spare the time to reply. Thank you.
Erde load bars retail at about £100 per pair and go across the width of the trailer. Presumably you then need a cycle bar kit (s) - one per bike - to fit on top of them.
Pretty costly way of doing it methinks.
Hi - yes it is an ERDE trailer. the roof bars are excellent quality and can be adjusted for the width and can be clamped anywhere along the side of the trailer. You will need to buy bike racks to attach to these but you can get these for £6 each at decathlon. I have 3 racks on them at the moment but would easily fit another. You just need a spanner to remove the bars should you need to access the trailer from the top. I find it easier to do this rather than taking off the bike racks to gain access. We then use the rack with the bike racks still attached to lock the bikes to when we are not using them as its heavy enough to stop anybody walking off with it!!! You can also still use the rain cover with the bars on as they are designed this way. Mine have been left out in the rain many times and there is no sign of any rust. I agree that it is an expensive option just to carry bikes but as I had a swan neck tow bar I didn't have an option to attach a bike rack and tow a trailer too....and the load bars have been extremely usefull for other things since too!! I bought my load bars from Bermick in Leicester as they were cheaper than Halfords..can't remember how much tho! I would think any trailer supplier should be able to get them for you. hope this helps.
Thank you very much for your reply, just one last question! what size trailer do you have. Mine is an erde 142 and I think I might be able to get two bikes on the top.
thanks again for taking the time to reply much appreciated.
