Hi folks i recently bought the Trangia 25 and im wondering how do i ignite this compact wonder and will i be able to get fuel for it in the UK when i visit in July?

The fuel well in the Trangia seems to be wide open and im worried about applying a naked flame to it, BOOM! I plan to stay in the snowdon area, is the fuel for the trangia widely available?

Any halp greatly appreciated

Peter

I have a Trangia and asked the same question ages ago( and I'm  still alive!)

No problem with lighting the fuel in the fuel well direct, that is the way to do it!

Might not actually look like there is flame on top but you will feel the heat.

Suggest you use longer matches where you can.

Anyway, you won't blow your hand off.Fuel available any camping/hardware shop. Not sure about supermarkets.

Meths is the fuel.

Use long matches to light the Trangia (I had one for years when I was in my teens - my daughter now has one), and check it's lit using a blade of grass, or the dead match (NOT your hand - that flame is HOT!!).  It's easier to light without the windshield/pan support in place, as long as it's not windy - replace windshield with the pan-handle to you are away from the flame.

Getting fuel is easy - you can get methylated spirits (the fuel a Trangia uses) at hardware shops, many camping stores, and chemists' shops.  It's best to have a 'proper' fuel bottle (like a Trangia bottle, or a Sigg bottle) to decant the meths into - they are safer to carry around.

I use a gas cigarette lighter to light my Trangia. What I do is I invert the burner while it's still capped. This allows the alcohol to "wet" the rim of the burner. Then I unscrew the cap, light the lighter and hold flame up against the lip. The alcohol will catch fire and eventually spread down into the well. This can be tricky to do in bright sunlight because you can't see the flame very well...be careful!
