hope this is listed in the correct forum.......................
Hi. I have a 2005 zaffira 1.6 life. We bought this car from new and has done 5000 miles since sept last year when we purchased. I drove home from shopping yesterday and the engine sounded a little rough. We have just checked and the dipstick is showing no oil in the engine. There has been no indication from the oil warning light. As i have my cars serviced yearly i have never had to top up oil levels, we onlt travel around 8,000 mls a year. Is it normal for a brand new car to use this much oil. we have only towed the caravan once with the car, a round journey of around 180 miles, does it use more oil when towing?
I dont know whether to go back to dealership and have a go at them because it has run out of oil after such a short period or just to fill it up and keep shtumm. If i fill it up what oil do i use, there seems to be a lot of choice these days.
Any advice gratefully accepted. Have to do something tomoz one way or tuther.
We had a Zafira Diesel, and we were pre-warned that they do burn oil. My mate, who owns a garage confirmed this, and said this was not unusual, and to expect 1 Litre/1,000 miles. If the petrol version is the same, you may have gone through 5 Litres.
He also said that this was quite common on a lot of vehicles with low mileage, but manufactureres did not like to announce this for obvious reasons.
There may be some get out clause for the garage, in that they may expect you to do routine checking of the basics.
I'm not telling you do do anything, but the correct oil to use will be clearly stated in the hand book.
Best of luck.
Jim.
When I bought my Vectra 2.0DTi with 15,000 miles on it I was surprised to see the oil level had dropped an eighth of an inch on the dip stick after 300 miles. After seeking advice I was told that it would use oil until it had covered 25,000, sure enough as it approached 25,000 it was using less and less and then it stopped. It now has 38,500 miles and I never have to top it up at all, I change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles rather than the 20,000 Vauxhall say.
Checking oil, water and tyres should be part of the weekly routine. As I average 1000 miles per week at work, and up to 650 miles per day, it is done daily.
Personally I would top up with the correct oil (as per the handbook)and continue motoring.
Yes we have now read the hand book and it advises to check every 600 miles, as this is our first ever brand new car i had not realised that this was the case. Suppose this should be done when car was bought but there are never enough hours in the day to always do what we should.
Annoying parts of this are that the dealer did not advise us of this even tho i explained this wa our first brand new car and was there anything to pay particular attention to and the fact that the oil warning light has not yet come on.
Looks like a trip to the spares shop tomorrow and fill up with 5 litres of oil
Oil warning lights have a nasty habit of coming on about three hundred yards before the engine goes "Squeeeal Bang!" so not having it come on may be a good thing. (Don't ask me how I know)
Please remember not to over fill the engine, its a swine to get out again!
Put a litre in, then another, then keep dipping and pouring small amounts till its full.
Top tip, write down the type of oil you want. It saves looking blankly at the oil rack in the shop. (Done that too!)
Thanx richard for the filling tip. Will do. Had to write down the type of oil we need as the wife is going to buy................Not that i should scoff it was her that noticed we were so low.
I've just checked in my handbook, and it only takes about a litre for my vehicle, between the min and max fill marks. So things may not be as bad as you thought.
Pour carefully and dip often, with luck, you might need less oil than you think.

Good tip. Another; is not to overfill a diesel.
