The Calor/Texol Midg-IT

The Midg-it(*) is the latest addition to the Texol/Calor Midge eating family. First brought to market in 2005 it is described as the "little brother" of the mighty MidgEater.

The Midg-it is a smaller, lighter unit that is designed for small gardens or other places where it's not necessary to protect such a large area. It's also marketed as a "portable" solution, though given the weight of the unit and the gas cylinders this probably means portable in a car, not a backpack!

The Midge-it works on exactly the same principles as the MidgEater. It mimics human breath by emitting carbon dioxide (CO2) to which an insect attractant (octenol) is added via a bait tablet. The resultant emission attracts the biting midges which are then trapped in a disposable bag. The design is environmentally friendly as no insecticides are used.

The unit is powered by Calor gas cylinders and will take either the 5kg or 13kg bottles. A 5kg bottle is expected to last between ten and twelve days, a 13kg bottle about a month. The octenol bait tablet last about a month.

And yes, there is a hyphen in the name - it's Midg-IT, not MidgIt or MidgeIT, although that is the way it is usually pronounced.

can any one remember the vitamin or mineral that some suggest to take so gnats, midges dont bite you. I saw it somewhere on the forum here!

I have got the Avon dry oil spray but did not put that on as did not want it to encourage my skin to burn!

Also stupid question but are you more likely to get bite at night??

I have just come back from a weekend away with 26 bites varying in sizes and locations on my body!!!

Well, thank heavens I'm five foot six coz at least I won't have one of them midget killers after me! Got enuff on me plate trying to avoid the ugly police!

Btw, princess moomoo, think you'll find it's vitamin B12 ya want to avoid the dreaded mozzies. Either that or smarm marmite all over yourself?Same difference and you'll be very popular if anyones peckish miles from food.

And as for not wanting to risk burning in the sun with the oil, you need to apply it on top of a strong sunscreen and keep re-applying it after each sunscreen application, then it should be fine.

Hate bl**dy bites meself, still working to try and make an unsightly scar on me chin fade since the allergic reaction to a bite on there a couple of months ago. I want results now though and this Bio Oil takes a couple of months apparently. S'pose I'll just have to keep wearing me paper bag with the eyeholes, painted freckles and crystal border till then.

I  heard that if you eat marmite they stay away!.

Princess moomoo is also in the 'hate' it camp, so she'd only be able to wear it. And for me eating aint an option anymore since the bl**dy allergy...

Got to say that I think you may well be right here coz it defo has the same sort of whiff that the B vitamins do! (Not terribly to my taste). Weird sort of pong.

i use avon skin so soft its great. smells good, not like that deet stuff.
