I took my daughter (18 months) away for the first time a few weeks back, and used a my first ready bed.  I was the same as you and thought a travel cot would be a bit bulky.  I blew it up at home for her to try out first - she never slept in it here, but she seemed quite happy lying in it.  That way it wasn't too much of a shock when she saw it again.  Then while we were away, she slept in her grobag in the ready bed, and we had an extra blanket on hand which she didn't need.  My husband slept in with her (she's a daddy's girl!) in case there was a problem, but she was fine.  So I'd definitely recommend you use something like that.

Travel cots might be a bit bulkier but we used to find them invaluable as they double up as a playpen (for those moments when you just can't watch the baby but don't want to confine her to a buggy). Also ideal to bung all the toys etc in when not in use!

I'm just getting organised for our first trip and for our 15month old and 3 year old I'm getting these:

http://www.catalogue.24studio.co.uk/shared/search/viewresults.asp?p=1#

(should be a childs blow up airbed/cot with shallow edges).

Unfortunately, this is some sort of catalogue and I've had to apply to open an account - you can also pick them up on ebay for twice this price and rather more postage!

We have one of these twin arc travel cots for our 1 year old, great if you want to save space as they pack down really small and are very sturdy..
