Hi guys
still very new to this so excuse me if I miss the obvious.

Bought a 4.5kg calor cylinder and regulator off ebay, got the cylinder exchanged today for a full one and bought some hose and jubilee clips.

Come home to test it, fitted the hose to regulator, and cooker, no problem.

Now to fit the regulator, on the bottle I bought, the regulator could be turn as a whle to remove it, this one I can turn the regulator at all to screw it on, so I used my adjustable spanner to turn the 'nut' on the regulator. It goes on fine, I let rip and everything works.

Now I decided to undo the regulator from the bottle as it seems the easiest way to seperate the bottle and cooker (tried unscrewing the jubilees and pulling hose off, but couldnt get a good grip), so I use the spanner to unscrew the regulator, no problem, but now when I look at the regulator the 'nut' is loose and the rubber seal has come away, before the 'nut' was fixed and a'ok.

So:

Have I knackered my regulator, or is there a thread it attaches to on the reg that I cant see?

Is this the best way, or is it better to leave the reg on on disconnect hose when transporting? (I prefer to disconnect regulator as the bottle has a screwcap that goes over the connection, thus preventing lose of gas if the value is opened by mistake).

any pointers advice is appreciated :)

When not connected, the "nut" should be loose - to connect you hold the regulator against the screw thread on the bottle and then tighten the nut - the regulator doesn't go round with the nut, the nut screws on to the bottle. The little black rubber should stay inside the regulator, around the "hole" that the gas goes through. If you see what I mean.

I use a 4.5 Kg bottle for my gas barbecue and find it is better to unscrew the regulator when not in use and leave it permanently attached to the appliance. Easy then to exchange the bottle when empty. Constantly forcing the pipe on & off the regulator or the appliance will weaken the rubber of the pipe.

Hope this helps.
