Hi juju,i have one of these, dident think it worked ,sorting out camping gear for first trip ,started cleaning mossie lamp ,it was full of themi was totally amazed,so i can say yes they work .But dont expect wasps or big flies to go into them.
ok so 1 for the OH and 1 for me, many thanks to you both.....me and OH having a bit of a competition on this one as once i bought a salad spinner and to this day i have never heard the last of it,. I have told him that i think this lantern that he has bought is 'salad spinner mark 2'....!!! ie a useless bit of kit!
We tried ours for the first time weekend before last. We were pitched by the trees and water so loads of midges etc. It was great. We plugged it in hanging from the awning during the evening and when we went to bed left it plugged in all night in the van. The amount of bugs that it fried was unbelievable. I hate the damn things so was delighted with it.
Not usually in favour of promoting peeps' trade bargins but......there is one highly recommended on the ukcs site can't remember which little orange box it comes under at the top of your screen, but it's the Clearlite one....Mr. Clearlite, (Mike, I believe it is), is a ukcs member but apparently, this thingy really does the jobby!
I'm just waiting for the day he comes up with the personal portable version...coz somehow, I just can't see us wandering around with one of these big jobbies strapped to our heads! So, it'll have to stay as the Avon Skin So Soft for me for now.
Just found out from another thread that the link you want is this one and apparently ukcs have a special offer on them at the moment too! Looks like you're wanting one at the right time eh?
We had one when we lived in Cyprus and one of the most satisfying noises when you where sat on the veranda sipping the Brandy Sours was the zap from the lamp when another mossie bit the dust. Sadly though now just a dim & distant memory as the company I worked for at the time forced us to come back to UK as other people wanted to try the lifestyle. Remanising aside funnily enough we where in our local Alladins Cave type shop at the weekend and spotted they had these zappers for sale at £9.99 A Ha says I, that will come in handy when we are camping remembering how good our old one was against mossies. When we got it home the kids wanted to know what it was, the only way we could explain was to say about the sceene in Bugs Life where the bug found the light irresistable and zap. They promptly went off bug hunting to see if it worked! Still the answer to your question is YES they work on all flying insects. I think the larger versions are used in food shops like butchers so they must make a difference.
We bought one in France, last year, and it certainly did zap the little blighters. We were just always a bit worried about where to hang it so it would be out of harm's way and not too close to the canvas but also where it would be most effective. It was also a bit bulky, and yet another thing to plug in, so we have just ordered one of those clearlite lamps, as already mentioned by hippy chick.
Does anyone know how long the oil reservoir in the clearlite lamp lasts? Would we have to order a 2nd reservoir and more mats for a 16 night trip to France.
