...because the 3-year warranty is worth nothing without getting angry.

Carried on from http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=71672&PagePosition=3

I am very angry now.

On taking the porta potti back to the camping shop where it was purchased in May, I was told they "cannot touch it" under Health & Safety law because it was used a few times. I explained it has been flushed out and rinsed etc. but this was no good.

I explained I only wanted a refund or replacement and it was in the box and was told again they cannot do anything.

When I said it tells me on the top of the box there is a 3-year warranty, I was told there should be something in the instructions to tell me what to do. I said that was appalling and that it had been used a few times, the guy then said I should ring the number he was writing down. I asked if I could call on his phone so he was there and he called himself. Apparantly the company is called Unipart. Anyway, they refused to give out Thetford's number and only agreed to send a new flushing mechanism when the guy reminded them about the 3 year warranty.

I now have to collect a flushing mechanism and fit it myself.  I shall email Thetford and let you know how I get on.  Wish I'd spent more and bought the Pett system now.

What a bummer!Sorry...couldn't resist.

I expect your new flushing mechanism will come with installation instructions though, but if it doesn't you might be able to download them from the Thetford website.

Bl**dy daft though saying they couldn't touch it coz of health and safety regs! Think the worlds gone mad. What's wrong with wearing a pair of heavy duty rubber gloves to take it off you and then giving you a brand spanking new one before disposing of the old one? Crazy. Not as if you'd left any........well....you know.....in it!

And when you think of all the peeps who actually buy these secondhand! Daft, utterly daft. Imagine if it was the same with public loos??? Thousands of people use those and I bet they're not as well cared for as our dear liccle porta pottis.

Hope your DIY goes ok and that you don't have anybody taking the p out of ya about this

Bet you aren't feeling very 'flushed'

Sorry I couldn't resist.

Well, we had a prob with our original Thetford (bought 2 years ago) and returned it to them last November without any problems at all. We had a problem with the flushing mechanism failing too - and working in Customer Services I insisted they repair it themselves or replace it. They opted for the replacement and within a week I had my new one.

Take no cr*p, (sorry) your contract under the sale of goods act is with the retailer. Its up to them to sort it.

If they have to deal with "hazardous" materials they should provide their staff with the proper protective clothing.

Ask them to refuse to repair, replace or refund in writing, then go straight to your trading standards dept.

hi all

this is standard practice through out the trade on thetford toilets or any other makes NO shop will touch them if faulty this is the health and safety act the procedure is to ring thetford who will sort this out for you as they will look into the problem on behalf of retailers as they will test them and repair them for you as they have the right conditions for doing this if sending to them they MUST BE CLEANED OUT FIRST otherwise they will send it back not touched or repaired this practise with chemical toilets goes back 30years so if you have a problem with one ring them they will solve the problems very quickly by the way they get very few back and all caravan dealers sell the spares for you to repair parts not covered by the warranty

think about it who would like to stick there hand into someone elses toilet and rumage around in it to repair it

Well my caravan dealer had no qualms abut his staff sticking their hands in my cassette toilet in the caravan and rummaging around to replace the seal whilst the van was in for a service.

And a very good job (!) they did on it too.

Sounds like the warranty is only bog-basic and not worth the (toilet) paper it is written on!

So how do plumbers get on when called to fix somebody's porcelain God then? Coz that even has to deal with......number two's

Most, (not all, but most), peeps stick to the number ones only rule for porta pottis, (or cassette loos), out of respect for the poor schmuck who has to do the uneviable task of tipping out and rinsing.

Thank heavens I have a 'man who does' for that bit

i hate it when companies use H&S as an excuss not to do something ! , next time ask them to qoute under what regulation of health and Safety thier reffering to, because i dont know of anything that can stop them ! as long as they take sensible precausions e.g wear rubber glove when handling the item , then they have no reason but to assit you.

Update.

Well two days have past and nothing from Thetford who say they will get back in two days.

My new flusher is ready to collect but, as I said before, I have to fit it.  Feel generally hacked off with the whole thing.
