We're off to Sandy Balls at the end of August and I need to buy pegs for the gravel pitch for a large Khyam (ie I need a lot!).  Was deliberating between cheaper rock pegs, and ones that need a drill (wurmis, screwpegs).  Then I saw all the posts re Deltas.  They look good, but can I use them all over the tent, or  just get them for the guys?  How do you get them in?

This is our first trip to Sandy Balls but it's not too far to go so I suspect we'll be back there and I want to make the right investment, ie not buy something that's a pain to get in or bends.

I would just go for rock pegs. If you've got a gravel pitch, you might not know how deep the gravel is and you don't know what's under the gravel either.

At the risk of sounding very dim, if they are gravel pitches, are they not very uncomfortable in the tent?  And don't they tear the fabric of the tent floor?  I can't imagine camping on gravel.

Hi all

We have been to sandy balls many times and are going again in a couple of weeks. If you do not want to go to the expense of buying you can hire pegs from the reception. You can hire "green groundsheets" also to make the gravel a bit mor comfortable but we have a folding camper and use one of the grass friendly groundsheets and dont have any problems. Dont forget a decent lump hammer or claw hammer to knock the pegs in / get them out or you will be all day trying to get them in with a mallet.

We use these as they hammer in and screw out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CARAVAN-AWNING-HARDSTANDING-ROCK-PEGS-pk10_W0QQitemZ170004814132QQihZ007QQcategoryZ36798QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

try these on e-bay - they are a good price

Hope this helps

Totally agree with you, Andy - good tip.  The 'gravel' has set like concrete and a big claw hammer has been very useful to get the pegs in and out.

When we first camped there (and other spots in the Forest) we had no idea ....... but quickly learnt!   I towed our folding camper down and set it up for my wife and kids to have a week or so on their own each year and luckily had my tool box in the back of my car the first time.  After that, the claw hammer was always with the FC when we set off to anywhere new, just in case there was gravel or hard ground to peg in to.

Thanks for the advice.  I purchased very similar ones to the above link + an extra lump hammer yesterday.  Decided not to hire as that was quite pricey.  We will be hiring groundsheet/astroturf or whatever from reception and I think I'll get one from B&Q too - always useful.

Really looking forward to the trip.
