Hi we are wanting to buy a roof box and bars, we have been looking at a few now and there are so many options, however we have been informed that we should buy the aero type bars rather than the standard square ones, mainly because of the wind noise whilst driving. However the cost between the 2 is quite significant, and therefore I was after advice, as to whether the extra cost is actually worth it??

HI,

I went for aero bars partly because I thought they looked nicer!  I must say I have not noticed any wind noise, but I have never had the square ones so don't whether the noise with them would be any more noticable.

The shape of the bars is not going to make much difference when you've got a great big roof box on top of them.

I've never noticed any significant wind noise with square bars, with or without the box.

Good point as I have just had to source some u-bolts and they are not readily available. I have a Karrite roof box and Automaxi Aero bars and the bolts provided are about 5-10mm too narrow between the legs - also probably a bit shy on length too.

I have just got hold of some 'trailer' u bolts from Towsure (50mm wide) that appear to do the trick for £1.60 a throw but they are substantial compared to the narrower bolts normally supplied with roof boxes. Just need to get them in a vice and compress them now as I can't get the bar off as the legs are a bit splayed!!

Well I’m going to disagree there I’m afraid… I have had and still got both type of bars. on different cars.  The square steel bares weigh twice as much as aero aluminium bars, this adds to the total roof weight! When I used the square steel bars the wind noise did my head in, especially if the sun roof was open, with the oval aluminium bars there was almost no noise at all. The aero bars look nicer too and had a nicer locking mechanism on too, much easier for one man to mount on the roof. More money yes but I’d say worth it, as I said I do own both types. Oh and you can get more accessories for the aluminium bars too..

We've got the Aero Bars, but I must admit I bought them because they look better. I don't hear any additional wind noise without the roof box on. I haven't used the square ones so don't know if they're the same

we've got square bars because of the price difference. They were fitted last year and we've left them on the car as we've been away already this year and are going again in a couple of weeks. We don't notice that they're on ther car.

Unless you wnat to splash out I would just go for the square ones. Like someone else said, when the roof box is on, you can hardly see the roof bars.

Just a thought about the price difference, have you tried Ebay, there are usually loads on there, I bought my Thule aero bars, and the correct fitting kit for just £65. practically brand new they are brilliant, and so easy to fit

Does it really make that much difference?

Is the question which are more economical feul wise? Personaaly, I don't think it makes alot of difference ........ fuel economy is not an issue when you have a large roof box attached to the bars.

If wind noise is the problem ....... the answer and solution is easy ............. don't fit them!!
