Can anyone recommend the best candles (or alternatives) and a good place to get them from?
I've tried asda/tesco etc but they obviously feel they're coming to the end of their season as they don't have any instock!
We also put on insect repellant but a few have still got through, although I've ordered some of that Avon stuff.
Many thanks
We found that by using the paraffin soaked wax torches from Lidl (around £2.99 for 5), the smoke kept the worst of the midges away.
They state that they burn for up to 2 hours and this was trues of the first couple but the last few were lucky to make the hour mark. OK for the money though and seemed to do the trick.
If you can get to a Price's candle shop - they're in all the Factory outlets, it seems - as well as the Citronella ones they do a Provencal Herb one that does the trick too, & it smells lovely!
Hi - I use Skin so Soft, which seems to work and alos have just bought a clearlite lamp after recommendations from this site. Haven't tried it yet but fingers crossed.

Makro have 100 citronella t lights ( great on their own or in a lamp )for £2.99 for 100.Got stocked up with them for our hols to France, Also today bought a big bottle of citronella oil ( £4.99 for use with half price ASDA Oil flame lamps now £3.00 instead of £6.00/ I love a bargain!
I purchased the Clearlite lamp and was out on the moors the other night, normally laced with Avon Sss.
I can definately say that it worked, wasnt a midge within 10 yds of me whilst others were swatting away furiously, and it gives off a pleasant glow too.
Excellent construction, well packaged and re-usable
We have 2 clearlite lamps cant recommend them highly enough they also look great on our table at night nice and cosy lighting also have 2 small brass lanterns old fashioned looking ones about 3" high that are just for tea lights in which we put citronella candles these also look lovely lit up at night .

Would those plug in things with tablets that you use abroad not work as well as the clearlite lamps? They seem to work on the same principle. Would the tablets from those plug in things work with the clearlite lamps?
You can buy 'Citronella' laced oil for 'Hurricane lamps' at many camping stores. I'm told that's quite effective at keeping the 'beasties' at bay and gives a nice warm glow in the evening too (which probably attracts the little buggers in the first place!)...
