We found that by using the paraffin soaked wax torches from Lidl (around £2.99 for 5), the smoke kept the worst of the midges away.

They state that they burn for up to 2 hours and this was trues of the first couple but the last few were lucky to make the hour mark.  OK for the money though and seemed to do the trick.

Cintronella candles.  Our Tescos still stock but they are also available at Wilkinsons/B&M and also garden centres

I purchased the Clearlite lamp and was out on the moors the other night, normally laced with Avon Sss.

I can definately say that it worked, wasnt a midge within 10 yds of me whilst others were swatting away furiously,    and it gives off a pleasant glow too.

Woolies are flogging off the end of season candles - got a bag of 75 pink citronella T lights, reduced from £5.99 to £2.98 to 99p last week.

Also have found incense sticks very good in Scotland last weekend - Opium - from our Pound shop.
